One Albion Community Day 🤝🌱

Over 100 students, faculty, staff, and community members gathered to volunteer throughout the greater Albion area. Projects included weeding at the Albion Community Gardens and cleaning up at Victory Park and several green spaces maintained by the Citizens to Beautify Albion. 🌼

For a decade, Albion's Sleight Leadership Program has taken students straight into Detroit's urban recovery — no textbooks required. This May, 10 student leaders spent a week walking neighborhoods, meeting changemakers, and writing real grant proposals for nonprofits like Rebel Nell and Oakland Avenue Urban Farms with their work evaluated by the Kresge Foundation. Along the way, they were hosted by fellow Brits paying it forward, including Kearney Miller '25, Isabel Allaway '20, and Melanie Piana '95.

Ten years in, the program named for the Sleight family's legacy of service is still turning students into leaders who understand community renewal from the ground up. Click the link to read the full story!

Albion College was honored to host Gloria Steinem on campus in 2004 as part of the Elkin R. Isaac Symposium, where we awarded her an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in recognition of her lifelong commitment to women's rights. A trailblazing activist who refused to dim her voice or vision, her legacy reminds us what it means to be the light for justice and equality. 💫

We were fortunate to share in even a small part of her remarkable journey. Our thoughts are with her loved ones and all those whose lives she bettered through her advocacy. She will be deeply missed. 🕯️

TIME magazine's newest college rankings put Albion at the top—first among liberal arts colleges in Michigan, and first among all Michigan institutions for creating an exceptional learning environment. TIME and data research firm Statista evaluated colleges and universities based on student outcomes, learning environment, and attractiveness to students.

Only the University of Michigan, University of Detroit Mercy, Michigan State University, UM Dearborn, and Michigan Tech ranked higher than Albion College.

What can stories about Black girlhood teach us about identity, culture, and the world? 📚

Ashanti McKnight ’28 is finding out. Her project, “Reading Black Girls: Building ‘The Black Girl Atlas,’” studies four Black women authors and how their writing speaks across generations about identity, lived experience, and struggle. Writers do more than tell stories — they’re historians, sociologists, and interpreters of the world. The Black Girl Atlas is a platform Ashanti is building to archive Black authors’ stories and explore how their experiences connect to global issues. An English and international studies major from Hudsonville, Mich., Ashanti developed her research with faculty sponsor Jess Roberts.

Presented at the 2026 Elkin R. Isaac Research Symposium, Ashanti’s work is a reminder of what stories, and Albion College students, can do. Learn more about student research and the Albion College experience at albion.edu/elkin. 📖
