Big News for our Faculty Spotlight featuring Ray Hernández-Durán 🎉

The exhibition catalogue for Voces del Pueblo: Artists of the Levantamiento Chicano in New Mexico has just won THREE major awards:

🏆 New Mexico Book Award for Art
🏆 New Mexico Book Award for Book Design
🏆 International Latino Book Award Gold Medal for Best Arts Book

This catalogue highlights the work of six Chicana and Chicano artists who helped spark the civil rights movement in New Mexico in the 1970s. Featuring an exhibition, an exhibition catalog, a program of events, and an archive, all of which are key parts of the project led by Professor Ray Hernández-Durán and Dr. Irene Vasquez.

In addition, the catalogue is also in the running for the Association for Latin American Art’s Exhibition Catalogue Award. Such fantastic news!! 😀

Student Spotlight featuring Sammie Chinigo ✨

After nearly 15 years of living with a chronic illness, Sammie Chinigo turns her journey into powerful art in her honors thesis show, "Burden of Proof." Through photography, sculpture, and textiles, Sammie reveals the hidden realities of chronic illness through pain, isolation, and misunderstood struggles many face but few see.

Sammie blends photography, sculpture, and textiles to tell her story, from dressing as a smiling 1950s housewife with medical gear to creating a couch covered in nails and roots that really makes you think.

We loved her conversation with Viva New Mexico, where she shares what it means to finally take off the mask and be seen.

The UNM Art History program emphasizes the study of art and visual and material culture as a means of understanding the intellectual and cultural history of humanity.

The MA and PhD programs in Art History offer research specializations from the medieval period through contemporary art and in various geographic regions of the world. Our programs are particularly strong in the arts from the diverse regions and cultures of the Americas.

• Work with diverse, internationally recognized, published art history faculty.
• Funding opportunities include teaching assistantships, scholarships, grants, gallery work, and the Bass Family Art History PhD Fellowship. TA and GA positions offer experience in teaching, research, and arts administration through departmental assistantships.
• Acquire museum experience through internships at local and regional art museums, including the UNM Art Museum, and participation on the UNM Art Museum's Student Advisory Board.
• Museum Studies and Arts Leadership and Business graduate minor options.
• Research and travel funding available for students of Latin American art through the UNM Latin American and Iberian Institute (LAII).
• Opportunities to gain editing and publishing experience through the internationally recognized in-house graduate student journal Hemisphere: Visual Cultures of the Americas.
• Fine Arts and Design Library and Zimmerman Library provide access to outstanding research collections and library resources.
• Access to on-campus world-class art and archival collections.
• Access to a range of world-class art collections and exhibitions at local and regional museums.
• Annual Gale Memorial Lecture Series brings renowned art historians, scholars, artists, and curators.
• Get involved in student advocacy and exhibitions through the Graduate Art Association.
