Interim Architecture Chair and Design and Planning Assistance Center Director Michaele Pride will deliver the keynote address at the UNM School of Architecture + Planning’s convocation ceremony.

Harvard-trained professor of architecture and urbanist, Pride has served in various leadership roles including early on as Associate Dean for Public Outreach and Engagement and most recently, as Associate Dean for Student Equity and Success. She has been a faculty member at the School of Architecture and Planning since 2011. She is slated to retire at the end of this academic year.

Raised in Los Angeles, Professor Pride began her career as a practicing architect. She began her faculty career at Woodbury University and had appointments at the University of Kentucky and the University of Cincinnati before joining The University of New Mexico. She was also a commissioner on the City Planning Commission of Cincinnati.

DPAC is a source of pride for the school, which is the second oldest continuously operating community design center based at a public university since 1969. Her leadership in teaching DPAC studio has brought students closer to communities in need. Recent notable work was assisting with resilient recovery guidance from the Hermit’s Peak and Calf Canyon wildfires. In 2020, she was also instrumental in updating the nation’s NAAB accreditation process, a requirement of all accredited programs of architecture.

“Michaele has dedicated her expertise and guidance to our School for many years. We celebrate her contributions to not just UNM, but the many people her projects have impacted in this region,” said Dean Robert Alexander Gonzalez. “She is a stellar example of how faculty-led community-engaged scholarship can be transformative for students and communities alike.”

The School of Architecture + Planning’s convocation ceremony takes place Saturday, May 16 at 7 p.m. in the UNM Student Union Ballrooms.

Congratulations to Brenton Cai from the University of Pennsylvania for winning the Jeff Harnar 2026 Second Prize in Student Landscape Architecture!

Brenton for their submission, Envisioning Indigenous Trail Experiences - Hopi Nation, AZ – This project shares how the Hopi landscape experiences drastic changes throughout the year due to natural processes like wind, sun, and rain. These processes form a cyclical “pulse” that guides Hopi culture, from ceremonies to artifact making, aiming to embrace resilience to natural processes while embracing an understanding of place.

UNM's School of Architecture + Planning is proud to partner with the Thornburg Foundation in rewarding innovative and inspiring projects like these through the Jeff Harnar Awards. Congratulations Brenton!

Congratulations to Aarif Ahmad and Thanh Le from the Harvard Graduate School of Design for winning the Jeff Harnar 2026 First Prize in Student Architecture!

Aarif and Thanh won for their submission, Circular Library.” This speculative project, located in Terlingua, Texas, addresses youth outmigration and limited infrastructure in a rural desert community in the Chihuahuan Desert. The design features a durable, low-cost circular library encircles a central well, providing water, light, and orientation. Built with local materials and labor, it anchors the community while allowing gradual change with an adaptable interior.

Congratulations to Nathaniel Dansie of the University of Virginia for winning the $3,000 Jeff Harnar 2026 Jury’s Choice Prize for Innovative Regional Design! This year was the first year a student won in this category, which is open to practicing professionals.

Nathaniel won for their submission, Spirit of Water, Empire of Sun: Designing for Desert Living. What began as a regional analysis which identified a crisis of rapid housing projects and the dwindling access to water in the city of St. George, Utah. At the architectural scale, this project drew lessons from existing desert communities around the world to incorporate key design elements and materials that maximize resilience in the desert. It emphasizes how we reinvent how we live in a place to accommodate urban growth and amplify the original identity and ecology of the desert landscape.

Congratulations to Shenglu (Owen) Qiu for winning the $3,000 2026 Jeff Harnar Award for Unbuilt Architecture.

The award-winning speculative project, “Inhabited Mud: Generative Earthen Housing,” is located in Antonito, Colorado. This project honors the region’s long tradition of earth architecture blending site mud with plant-based fibers, while using generative AI and robotic 3D printing to create a customizable habitat. Architectural elements act as a thermal climate boundary, harmonizing ancient ecology with futuristic fabrication that can one day dissolve harmlessly back into earth.
