Connecting students with employers and turning classroom skills into career opportunities!

The James & Gail Ellis School of Business Leadership hosted Sellers Market, bringing together students and employers recruiting for roles in sales, marketing and business development.

Throughout the event, students connected with recruiters, explored career opportunities and participated in one-on-one interviews with representatives from different companies. The experience gave students an opportunity to strengthen their interviewing and networking skills while building valuable professional connections.

The James & Gail Ellis School of Business Leadership is welcoming six new faculty members this semester! In this series, get to know the people bringing new expertise and perspectives to Ellis.

Meet Kristen Raney, assistant professor within the department of Management. Kristen is new to the state of New Mexico coming from Charlottesville, Virginia after finishing a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Virginia (UVA) McIntire School of Commerce.

“My impression of both Ellis and UNM were that these were institutions that were really human-first - that is, they cared about the individuals as whole people, not just in their role as faculty, students, staff etc. I got the feeling that this was a place that really valued and fostered the development of community and led with care and compassion. Those things were all attractive to me.”

This semester, Kristen is teaching two sections of the capstone course, strategic management.

“I have heard such great things about the UNM students and am super excited to get to know them and work together to create meaningful educational experiences,” said Kristen. “What I hope most for is that they will leave feeling more confident in their ability to think critically and strategically, and to make decisions in situations where there is uncertainty or ambiguity.”

“It is such an exciting time in their lives — most of my students are seniors, so this transition feels huge and they are thinking about what the next steps might look like and who they might want to be/how they want to move forward,” said Kristen.

Her research examines how individuals and organizations are evaluated, particularly under conditions of uncertainty. She is especially excited to pursue projects related to equity and access, including how social judgments, identity, and organizational contexts shape opportunities and outcomes.

“I hope to learn from my students’ perspectives—the questions they ask, the things they notice, and the experiences they bring to the classroom. I also want to learn what helps them learn best and how I can continue improving as an instructor so I can better support them in reaching their goals. And, as someone still getting to know the community, I’m excited to learn more from them about UNM, Albuquerque, and New Mexico more broadly.”

Prior to UNM and UVA, Kristen received her Ph.D. in strategic management from the W.P Carey School of Business at Arizona State University and an MBA and Master's in Public Service from the University of Arkansas.

Career Week at Ellis was a success!

Students had opportunities to build confidence, strengthen their professional presence and prepare to connect with employers. At Fit Check, our Community Closet event, students had access to free professional attire, headshots and resources to help them put their best foot forward.

Students also connected directly with employers during a networking reception ahead of the Business and Accounting Career Fair, giving them an opportunity to make introductions and build relationships before the fair began.

The week wrapped up with the Business and Accounting Career Fair, where students explored internship and career opportunities and connected with employers from across industries.

Thank you to the faculty, staff, volunteers, donors and employer partners who helped make these events possible and supported Ellis students on their path from classroom to career. A special shoutout to students Tyler Nygren and Shaylene Sanchez for sharing photos from the career fair!

Ellis students can apply for nearly 100 donor-funded scholarships, with more than $720,030 awarded annually to Ellis students.

Complete one scholarship application by Oct. 31 to be considered for available awards based on eligibility criteria, including academic achievement, financial need and individual scholarship requirements.

Eligible applicants include:
• Current Ellis students
• Students who have applied to an Ellis program by the deadline
• Pre-business majors

Need a place to complete your application? A computer is available at the welcome desk in the McKinnon Center for Management, across from the Steve Griego Innovation Center. Look for the scholarship signs!

From business analytics to building Seoul Gimbap, Hanmin Kim’s journey is the focus of the latest episode of the Success Beyond the Classroom.

Hanmin earned his Master of Science in Business Analytics from Ellis in 2024 and has since put that experience to work as an entrepreneur. In Episode 3, he shares more about his path, the story behind Seoul Gimbap and what he has learned along the way.

Last week, we introduced the six faculty members joining the Ellis community this fall. Now, we’re getting to know them individually.

First up is Gabriel Gazzoli, assistant professor in the Department of Marketing, Information and Decision Sciences.

Gabriel first joined Ellis as a clinical business faculty member in August 2025 and begins his tenure-track role as an assistant professor this semester. He is currently teaching marketing management and marketing strategy.

“I am looking forward to working with our students and connecting what they learn in the classroom with real-world business challenges and decisions.”

Gabriel’s research focuses on organizational frontlines and transformative service, including the interactions between customers and employees during service encounters and how service systems can contribute to the well-being of individuals, communities and ecosystems.

Before joining UNM, Gabriel was an assistant professor at Georgia Southern University and New Mexico State University. He holds a Ph.D. in marketing and a master’s degree in hospitality administration and management from Oklahoma State University and a bachelor’s degree in hospitality business management from Washington State University.

Our Executive MBA community continued the Industry and Alumni Speaker Series with Brad Cook, BBA ’02, EMBA ’15, senior vice president and chief operating officer for Presbyterian Medical Group. Brad oversees approximately 1,200 physicians and advanced practice clinicians, more than 40 clinics and about 2,000 employees across New Mexico.

Brad reflected on his own EMBA experience and the lessons that have stayed with him throughout his career. He emphasized that some of the program’s greatest value came from learning how to work through challenges with others and building relationships that lasted well beyond graduation. He also shared how his business background and EMBA experience continue to inform the difficult trade-offs he makes as a health care leader.

Drawing on more than two decades at Presbyterian, Brad gave students and alumni an inside look at the business of health care and the challenges facing New Mexico. The conversation covered access to care and provider shortages, the economics of health care, rural and virtual care, changing reimbursement models and the need to build sustainable systems that continue to meet patients’ needs.

He also shared how Presbyterian is approaching transformation, from expanding virtual care and using AI to reduce administrative burdens to rethinking operations and finding new ways to increase access to care. Throughout the conversation, Brad challenged the group to think about the role business leaders can play in solving some of New Mexico’s most complex problems.

We’re excited to welcome six faculty members to the Ellis community this fall!

Bringing expertise across accounting, management, marketing, information systems and decision sciences, our newest faculty members are already adding new perspectives to the classroom and our academic community.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be introducing each of them individually to learn more about what they teach, their research interests, their professional and academic backgrounds, and what they’re looking forward to at Ellis.
