UNM Opera Theater

UNM Opera Theater The official page for the UNM Opera Theater. Our program presents two productions in the academic year.

The UNM Opera Theater is a nationally recognized program, winning two first place awards from the National Opera Association. All students in Opera Theater are given the opportunity to perform in the opera scenes performances or the fully-staged opera production accompanied by the UNM Symphony Orchestra. All of our costumes come from the Santa Fe Opera. Our goal is to educate and develop the talen

ts of singers who have an interest not only in singing opera, but also in pursuing directing, musical theater, and developing the “whole” singer. We incorporate improvisational techniques and movement into the curriculum as well. The UNM Opera Theater is directed by Leslie Umphrey and Sam Shepperson.

The last person on our team, and certainly not least, is our director, Professor Jamie Flora! This is Prof. Flora’s first year at UNM, and us students were thrilled to work with him! He brings such knowledge, talent, excitement, and fun to the vocal and opera department at UNM, and we are excited to work with him again in the future. Come see Prof. Flora’s FIRST directed show at UNM tonight at 7:00 pm MT via YouTube. For more information, follow our event page on Facebook!

You’ve met the cast, and now it’s time to meet the people behind the scenes, starting with our fearless music director, Dr. Kristin Ditlow! This is Dr. Ditlow’s seventh year at UNM as a pianist, conductor, and vocal coach. Her favorite operas are the three DaPonte operas by Mozart, which include “The Marriage of Figaro,” “Don Giovanni,” and “Così fan tutte.” Makes sense since UNM Opera did “Così fan tutte” back in February of 2020. In our show tonight, Dr. Ditlow really enjoyed learning some of the musical theater numbers, including “Cabaret” and pieces from “Phantom” because she was learning them for the first time as a music director. Make sure you join us tonight to watch Dr. Ditlow play the piano at 7:00 pm MT via YouTube. For more information, follow our event page on Facebook!

The last member of our cast is Hope Willenbrink, a first year graduate student at UNM. Hope is a soprano. She is looking forward to playing Belinda in UNM’s spring production of “Dido and Aeneas” by Purcell. Hope’s favorite pieces to perform in our online scenes program is “Volta La terrea” and “Credete al Mio Dolore”. Make sure you watch Hope perform these pieces December 4th at 7:00 pm MT via Zoom. Next in our cast is Grace Weaver, a third year graduate student at UNM. Grace is a mezzo-soprano. One of her favorite moments in opera is the final trio of Rossini’s “Le Comte Ory,” because the music is utterly beautiful and playful while what is playing out on stage is scandalous and hilarious. The role of Isolier from this opera is a dream role of Grace’s. Her favorite piece to perform in our upcoming show is “Chi m’insegna il caro padre” from “Alcina.” Make sure you watch Grace perform this piece December 4th at 7:00 pm MT via Zoom.
