Adapting and Synthesizing Open Textbooks

This session introduces participants to open textbooks, their benefits, and how to adapt and synthesize them. Discover ways to modify existing OER and combine works to create a book-length adaptation project. Explore methods of organizing openly licensed materials through a spreadsheet system for collaboratively vetting OER resources. This presentation is based on the work Jennifer has done modifying resources and working with faculty on open publications, and it will introduce attendees to resources developed for the OER publication process at UNM.

Accessible Archives: Online Historical Resources about the University of New Mexico

In this online presentation, UNM University Archivist Portia Vescio and UNM Health Sciences Library & Informatics Center Archivist Abbie Olivas will discuss locating and using historical resources about the University of New Mexico in two online platforms: New Mexico Digital Collections and the UNM Digital Repository. They will highlight important collections related to UNM’s history as well as discuss the cost (subscriptions, equipment, staff time, etc.) of providing online access to these resources.

Data Are Power: Big Data, Open Data, and Critical Data Studies

Who benefits from big data and open data? Who bears the costs? What does it mean to think of data as a form of power? In this talk, Dr. Danielle Maurici-Pollock considers this year's International Open Access Week theme "The Cost of Knowledge" from the perspective of critical data studies, examining the sometimes hidden and often unevenly distributed costs of data, including topics such as privacy concerns, ethical challenges, environmental impacts, and the invisible labor supporting data infrastructures.
