⭐️Mentor & Resident Spotlight⭐️

This week, we are highlighting Resident Megan Roach and her mentor, Mrs. Rachel Stone, at Donnie Bickham Elementary Middle School in Shreveport. Megan is a resident in LSUA’s Bachelor of Science in Education online program and is completing her residency in 2nd-grade.

LSUA’s online B.S. in Education program allows teacher candidates from across Louisiana to complete their university coursework online while completing their required in-person residency in a partner school within their local community. Megan is one example of the many future educators preparing for the classroom through this flexible, statewide program.

Mrs. Stone has a favorite reminder when facing a challenge: “We can do hard things!” We couldn’t agree more. We are grateful for mentors who encourage, challenge, and support our residents as they grow into the educators our communities need.

Mentor & Resident Spotlight

We are excited to spotlight Resident Alyssa Dickson and her mentor, Mrs. Maegan Burkett, at Many Elementary. As a 2nd-grade resident, Alyssa is gaining valuable classroom experience in English Language Arts while learning alongside an experienced mentor teacher.

Alyssa is also a resident in our Bachelor of Science in Education online program, demonstrating the reach of LSUA’s teacher preparation program beyond our local community. With residents placed in schools across Louisiana, our online program provides aspiring educators the opportunity to complete their coursework while gaining meaningful, hands-on experience in real classrooms.

We are proud to support future educators throughout our state and grateful to mentors like Mrs. Burkett who play an essential role in their preparation.

Our LSUA School of Education residents had the opportunity to attend The Rapides Foundation’s 2026 Symposium today. Geoffrey Canada, founder of the Harlem Children’s Zone, shared message about the opportunity to save every child and the impact one caring adult can make. Every child deserves someone who believes in them more than they believe in themselves. What an important reminder for our future educators of the difference they can make in the life of a child!

We are pleased to spotlight Resident James Kyle Peters and his mentor, Mr. Kenneth Choate, at Ouachita Junior High School. As an 8th-grade resident, James Kyle is gaining meaningful classroom experience in Social Studies while learning alongside an experienced educator.

Today marked the first official class for our Elementary Residents! While today was their first classroom meeting together, these future teachers have already been hard at work in their field experience schools since the beginning of August—learning, observing, teaching, and becoming part of their school communities. ❤️

And, of course, no first class would be complete without a new member of the School of Education family…

🪿✨ Meet Dolly!

Our classroom goose was named in honor of Dolly Parton and her incredible commitment to literacy and getting books into the hands of children through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Because we believe future teachers should understand that literacy is more than a subject—it’s a gift, a gateway, and a lifelong opportunity.

So here’s to our residents, their first official class, the schools already welcoming them, and Dolly—who will be keeping an eye on all things along the way!

This morning, our LSUA School of Education residents began their Advanced Cohort Training at the Alexandria Museum of Art as part of our unique partnership focused on Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS).

Cindy Blair of the Alexandria Museum of Art and Dr. Krista Redmond of the LSUA School of Education are leading our residents through this powerful experience, equipping future teachers with strategies that help students observe, think critically, ask questions, communicate, listen, and make meaning.

We are proud to be the only teacher preparation program in the state of Louisiana offering our residents this kind of museum-based VTS training and partnership opportunity.

And the impact goes far beyond our residents. These are instructional practices our teacher candidates will carry directly into PK–12 classrooms, strengthening literacy, comprehension, critical thinking, and learning across content areas.

We are grateful to Cindy, the Alexandria Museum of Art, and our incredible School of Education faculty for investing in the next generation of teachers—and ultimately, the students they will serve.

We are excited to spotlight Resident Josie Bordelon and her mentor, Ms. Aleah West, at Pine Prairie High School. Josie is gaining valuable hands-on experience working with 1st-grade students across all content areas, building her instructional skills through daily classroom experiences and mentorship.
