We are saddened to learn of the death of Wendell Berry, recipient of the VTS Dean’s Cross for Servant Leadership in 2014 and acclaimed poet, author, and environmentalist.
“Wendell Berry was a giant of the poetry world; he weaved together spirituality and the environment in poems so powerful that they changed the way you looked at the world. As a recipient of the Dean's Cross from VTS, we mourn his passing and give thanks for his witness," Dean Ian S. Markham said.

On Sept. 11, “Bridging Ground” will premiere at Virginia Theological Seminary, bringing a deeply personal Alexandria story to the screen. The documentary follows the seminary’s effort to confront its history of enslaved and exploited Black labor—and what happened after it moved from acknowledgment to direct financial payments to descendants. The program now has a $2.8 million endowment, with more than 200 verified descendants receiving annual payments. At the film’s heart are family history, the lifelong friendship of Mark Farkas and Pastor Elwood Jones, and the work of reparations director Ebonee Davis-Hayes.

Thank you to all who joined us for the launch of “Have Mercy! Following Jesus in Politically Perilous Times”. We are grateful to everyone who helped make this special evening a success!

Join the Saint Nicholas Center for Faith and Justice for the launch of Have Mercy, a collection of essays from faculty at Virginia Theological Seminary and General Theological Seminary exploring the Gospel’s call to mercy in our contemporary political and social landscape.

Inspired by the witness of Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde and the work of the Have Mercy Initiative, this evening will feature a panel discussion with contributors reflecting on faithful leadership, spiritual formation, and the practice of mercy in a divided world. Together, panelists will consider how churches, seminaries, and communities can form leaders equipped to meet the challenges of this moment with courage, compassion, and hope.
