This year’s recipient of the Gary Scott Award is Taeya Starkey. She has struggled to succeed, against great odds. She moved between foster homes and attended half a dozen schools prior to moving to LeRoy with new foster home guardians.
Further, demonstrating her determination and grit was her ability to go from the BOCES technology program to the academic LeRoy program in the last two years
She has chosen a non-traditional field for women to succeed in (diesel mechanics) and has volunteered to recruit women to technical training, by encouraging them to join her in these non-traditional fields that ultimately pay better than many more glamorous jobs. The Gary Scott scholarship for her is $10,000. She will attend Alfred State this Fall.
Pictured here as well as her foster parents is Kathy Damann, Gary’s cousin with the retiring vice-principal Lynda Lowe.

Such a waste of a good life with great promise.
50 years ago this week 2nd Lt Gary Scott, Platoon Leader, 101st Airborne was killed in an ambush south of Hue, Vietnam.
His Corpsman reported Gary saved his life – no surprise.
In “Letters Home from Vietnam”, Gary’s radioman said, “Gary could not understand the whys of this conflict that called him 10,000 miles from home.”
Gary graduated at the top of his ROTC class – he had choices. When I asked him why the Infantry he said, “There were not enough African-Americans in leadership positions in this country”
I still ask, why should Gary and other non-Caucasians feel it is necessary to earn acceptance in our country – even today. My parents were immigrants, his weren’t. Enough.
