The Writing Center is staffed by an expert team of Writing Specialists with graduate degrees and teaching experience, and a team of undergraduate Writing Fellows selected by nomination. Together, we work with writers engaged with every aspect of the writing process and provide a range of services including individualized tutoring sessions and group workshops. Our areas of focus include: becoming a
better communicator, improving revision techniques, composing effective personal statements, gaining grant-writing skills, and understanding the world of publishing. The Writing Center also offers in-class workshops tailored around specific prompts as requested by faculty. Our special events include poetry workshops, creative writer’s circle, Capstone writing retreats, special-interest reading groups, Conversation Buddies, and guest speaker series. Students may drop in our center or schedule an appointment with us by using our online appointment system through Portal. We encourage students to bring a copy of their assignments along with any material they would like to discuss. During a tutoring session a Writing Specialist or Fellow will offer support for improved communication through various inquiry methods. Students maintain responsibility for their own work throughout the session; therefore, we do not edit or correct student papers, nor do we produce content. Instead, we ask questions that help students discover effective writing and revision strategies on their own toward life-long learning.
