About the Centre
The Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine is one of the most vibrant groups of historians devoted to the study of science, technology and medicine in the world. CHOSTM has a distinctive approach to the history of science, technology and medicine. Our aim is to research science, technology and medicine in history, in close integration with other historical specialisms, and we are notably fully integrated into King’s College’s Department of History both organisationally and intellectually. With over 30 years of trajectory, our research covers a long chronological range, and concerns with histories at different scales; global, regional, as well as national histories.
The Centre is an important place for PhD training with a distinctive focus and energy within the Department of History. We strongly encourage students to participate actively in the community of historians in the UK and around the world and indeed to work on the histories of all parts of the world. We currently have students working on India, the Far East, North America, Chile, Colombia and, of course, Britain (see our current postgraduates here). The Hans Rausing Scholarship has historically funded home and international students. We offer intensive and rigorous supervision, and emphasise training in historical methods, in how to present work orally and in writing, and we take seriously the need to prepare students for the job market. The Centre offers regular seminars, reading groups and workshops where students and staff meet to discuss work-in-progress and the field’s state-of-the-art. All students have opportunities to teach undergraduate courses across periods specialisms in the Department of History.
