The Mayor’s Greening Initiative is a twice-annual (spring and fall) effort to plant trees throughout the city of Grand Rapids. Volunteers have gathered each year since 2016 to plant hundreds of trees in neighbors lacking adequate canopy cover. 🌳
Research shows that tree-lined streets lead to happier and healthier residents, reductions in crime, and more bearable conditions in hot summer months. 🌞
This spring’s opportunities are on Friday, April 29 from 1p-4p or Saturday, April 30 from 9a-12p or 1p-4p. Volunteers are needed to plant the trees as well as assist teams with clean up and tear down. Bike & Build is hosting a virtual info session for GVSU students TODAY at 5 PM ET. In the info session, they will cover the Bike & Build experience which involves building leadership and advocacy skills through 15-20 volunteer days, becoming a champion for affordable housing through a 6-week pre-ride curriculum, expanding your network by joining the 3,800+ mission-driven alumni base, and biking across the country or regionally and exploring the natural wonders of the U.S. (no bike experience necessary - seriously!)
