GrandValley Betas This is the official page for the Lambda Beta men of Grand Valley State University. (National Constitution of Sigma Lambda Beta)

Sigma Lambda Beta (known as Lambda Betas or Betas) is the largest historically Latino-based social fraternity established with multicultural membership. SLB was founded April 4th, 1986 at the University of Iowa on the principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship, Community Service, and Cultural Awareness. The foundation of our organization is based upon cultural understanding and wisdom; hence, our mott

o: "Opportunity for Wisdom, Wisdom for Culture." With over 150 entities in under 30 years of incorporation, Sigma Lambda Beta is considered the largest and fastest growing Latino-based multicultural membership fraternity in existence. Locally, Sigma Lambda Beta was founded at GVSU on December 5th, 1998 and was chartered as the Alpha Gamma Chapter on November 4th, 2004. Purpose/Aims
"The purpose of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc., shall be primarily one of promoting Latino/Hispanic culture and standards of excellence in morality, ethics, and education. Further, the Fraternity shall work to better serve the needs and wants of all people by disseminating the diverse culture which we all share. Finally the Fraternity shall maintain respect for the views of others through this tolerance, enhancing our understanding of one another, and thus bettering our community, our country, and the world."

Today is National Latino AIDS Awareness Day. According to the United States Census, in 2019 Hispanics/Latinos made up 18.3% of the US population, or 59.9 million people. Disproportionately, Hispanics/Latinos represent roughly 23% of the 1.2 million people living with HIV, or 276,000.

Hispanics/Latinos are less likely to get tested for HIV because of different barriers and challenges that include fear, mistrust, stigma, discrimination, and homophobia. In the United States, poverty, migration patterns, lower educational level, and language barriers may make it harder for some Hispanics/Latinos to get HIV testing and staying in care.

Several members of our chapter committed to getting tested this past week as part of a national campaign to raise awareness. If you are interested in participating, you can find a free testing site here https://gettested.cdc.gov/.

21 years ago, on December 5th, the Alpha Gamma chapter was founded at Grand Valley State University and since then, has left its mark on our campus through years of hard work, dedication, perseverance, and brotherhood. All of our brothers have worked tirelessly to promote our organization and principles.
21 years later, we are still here making an impact on this campus & will continue to solidify a foundation for brothers to come.

Best wishes to our brother Santiago Gayton on his last day as Assistant Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life at Grand Valley State University. For the past 7 years, Santiago has worked in the Office of Student Life and has played a critical role in promulgating Greek Life at GVSU.

Santiago 'Somoza' Gayton became a brother of the Alpha Gamma Chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc. on March 1, 2003 as the Captain of the Gamma line; Ship M.I.G.R.A., making him the 4th person to cross in our chapter. Santiago held all four executive board positions during his undergraduate studies and since then has served as Assistant Regional Director for our fraternity, while also playing an active role in the Sigma Lambda Beta Alumni Network of West Michigan.
Adelante Brother Somoza!
