On June 19, we recognize Juneteenth, which commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved Black's in Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom, marking a significant moment in our nation's journey toward liberty and justice.
As we observe Juneteenth, we are reminded of the importance of reflecting on our history, celebrating the resilience and contributions of Black Americans, and recommitting ourselves to the values that define the University of Mount Union.
Juneteenth connects deeply to our core values of Belonging, Excellence, and Integrity. We honor Belonging by fostering a community where every individual feels welcomed, respected, and valued. We pursue Excellence by seeking knowledge, understanding diverse perspectives, and striving to create positive change. We demonstrate Integrity by acknowledging our history honestly and working toward a more just and equitable future.
Whether through learning, reflection, service, or participation in community events, Juneteenth offers an opportunity for each of us to celebrate freedom and strengthen our commitment to these shared values.
As we observe Juneteenth, may we celebrate the progress that has been made, acknowledge the work that remains, and strengthen our commitment to a community where freedom, dignity, and opportunity are accessible to all.
