The Sigma Chi Fraternity proudly recognizes Jonah Oberschlake as the recipient of the 2016-2017 Balfour Award given to the Outstanding Senior of the Theta Nu Chapter at Alma College. This award is given based off of academic success and career plans after graduation, commitment to quality of brotherhood, efficiency at fulfilling the duties of every office, campus involvement and other organizations, and commitment to philanthropy. Brother Oberschlake has held multiple positions throughout his time at Alma, which include: Recruitment, Social, Public Relations, Sports, Tribune, and Formal chairs. On top of Sigma Chi, brother Oberschlake is involved with the Alma College Climbing Club and Chapel Life while also working at Joe’s Café, as a TA in the Math department, and as a Wall Monitor at the Rock Wall. Brother Oberschlake has also started and directed the Alma College Youth Climbers Camp, which reaches out to multiple school districts in the Alma community to get kids both active and involved with their peers. He has also helped be a small group leader for the Alma Youth Mix and has participated in other volunteer experiences throughout the Alma community. When asked, “What is your favorite part of receiving this award,” Oberschlake responded,
“My favorite part about receiving this award is that it came from the other brothers in the chapter. Sigma Chi has allowed me to grow as a leader, develop bonds with those of different talents, temperaments, and convictions, and has allowed myself to become more confident in my abilities and myself. If it were not for the brothers of Sigma Chi, I honestly believe that I would not be who I am today or possess the tools that are necessary to excel after graduation. Thus, by receiving this award from the same brothers responsible for the most life changing years of my life makes this award all the more special.”
After graduation, brother Oberschlake wishes to continue his education by pursuing a Master’s in Mathematics. The Theta Nu Chapter of Sigma Chi wishes the best of luck for brother Oberschlake along with the rest of the Graduating class.
In Hoc, Signo Vinces.
