The Architecture Summer Design-Build Studio, which has been taking place at Temple Ambler since 2022, is in full swing and students this summer are looking to the stars for inspiration.

This year, the studio is adaptively redeveloping the former Johannes Kepler observatory at Temple Ambler. In partnership with Circular Philadelphia “a non-profit organization that promotes the transition from a linear (take-make-dispose) economy to a circular economy in the greater Philadelphia region," architecture students are exploring concepts of circularity to design and build a new life for this long dormant scientific asset!

In the coming weeks we’ll be sharing stories, video and images of the students’ innovative work. Stay tuned!

This year, Temple is hosting several events across campus and beyond to celebrate the significance of Juneteenth, a national holiday on June 19 that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It is a significant date in American history and the African American experience. Learn more here: https://tinyurl.com/4ewa68b8.

Activities include a partnership between Temple and the Philadelphia Museum of Art for its Juneteenth Celebration featuring live music and artist talks. Selected works from Temple’s Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection related to the Underground Railroad, Civil War, Emancipation and Reconstruction will be on display at the event.

Temple IDEAL (Institutional Diversity, Equity, Advocacy and Leadership) will host a virtual Juneteenth Freedom Café community dialogue event at 12 p.m. Friday, June 19. Inspired by the PBS documentary Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom, this interactive session will explore the themes of liberation, faith and the pursuit of justice.

On Saturday, June 20, the Temple University Black Alumni Alliance and IDEAL will partner to host its annual Family Field Day Celebration. More information is available here: https://tinyurl.com/4vv6ac2v.

For Daria Newpher, her opportunities in the green industry after graduation could take her as close as her hometown to as far away as Austria. The possibilities are as plentiful and diverse as the plants she has studied and cared for in her time at Temple.

“I’ve always loved plants and have wanted to work with plants as much as I could. My view of what I could do with that interest has definitely changed over time,” said Newpher, who graduated in May with a degree in Horticulture, offered by the Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University. “Initially I thought about working in nurseries and greenhouses but as I’ve gone through the major, I fell in love with conservation and restoration — protecting areas for future generations and bringing areas back to the way they were meant to be. Exploring all of the different things I could do with plants is what drew me to the horticulture major.” Read more at https://bit.ly/4fYDSng.
