We are reaching the tail end of spring and soon rounding into summer! So, what should the home gardener be thinking about at this time of year?
According to Sam Makler, Manager of the Collins Nursery of the Ambler Arboretum, “in late May what I start to think about is not only the standard care but filling in any gaps.”
“Every year I tell myself that there are no more gaps and there is no more planting to be done but by May and certainly by June you start to see some spots where you’re thinking ‘I could fill in one more thing here or there.’” he said. “This is a great time to find those spaces and think about size, color, whatever your pollinator interest might be, what you want to attract. This is the time when you really start to see the garden begin to fully form. So, you can identify those spaces where you can start to add in some new things.”
The Collins Nursery, Makler said, “is the best place to go and find those things” to fill the gaps.
“Because we have such a large variety of native species here you can always find those common things but what we like to highlight are the things that are not as widely available,” he said. “When folks start to buy them, they tend to be fan favorites.”
Additional Collins Nursery Open days will be held on June 13, July 4, July 11, August 15, September 12, September 26 and October 17 so mark your calendar!
