Kappa Alpha Theta- Iowa State University

Kappa Alpha Theta- Iowa State University The women of Kappa Alpha Theta strive to provide an atmosphere that promotes growth, sisterhood and the values our sorority was founded on.

Yesterday, today, and tomorrow, Kappa Alpha Theta exists to nurture each member throughout her college and alumnae experience and to offer a lifelong opportunity for social, intellectual and moral growth as she meets the higher and broader demands of mature life. The intellectual ambition of the Fraternity shall be the attainment of highest scholarship. The social aim of the Fraternity shall be to

exercise the widest influence for good. The moral aim of the Fraternity shall be the standard of love. In 1837, the Methodist Church established Indiana Asbury (now DePauw University) in Greencastle, Indiana. Indiana Asbury officially opened its doors to women in 1867, but not without great uproar from the male students. The first women students at Indiana Asbury were looking for ways to make friends and find support and encouragement for their academic pursuits. They were reviled by their teachers, taunted by their classmates, and ignored by their girlhood friends who did the "right" thing and attended conservatories for girls. It took these brave pioneers three years to found Kappa Alpha Theta, the first Greek-letter Fraternity for women. To be sure, there were societies for women before 1867, and some of these had secret rituals with badges, passwords, mottoes, and other symbols. But in 1870, Theta became the first women's Greek-letter fraternity because its primary founder, Bettie Locke, wanted full membership in a male fraternity. When the men asked her to wear their fraternity badge as a "mascot," she responded, "If you won't initiate me into your fraternity, I'll start my own." Thus, Kappa Alpha Theta was established on January 27, 1870. In 2005, Kappa Alpha Theta celebrated its 135th anniversary.

Why Theta Wednesday!!

Meet Bella Van Oosbree ⭐️

Going into recruitment, I was looking for a chapter with a genuine sisterhood bond and a place where I felt truly connected. During my conversations at Theta and walking through the house, I could immediately feel how much everyone cared for each other. The love and support throughout the house felt so genuine, and that’s what made Theta stand out to me. I stay for the supportive sisters and the meaningful bonds that make Theta feel like home.
Theta upholds its values and connects so deeply to our philanthropy, which makes me so proud to be a member of the chapter.

One piece of advice I would give to PNMs is to stay open-minded. Sometimes the chapter you least expect ends up feeling the most like home. It’s easy to get caught up in opinions or first impressions, but the best connections happen when you let yourself fully experience each conversation. Give every chapter a genuine chance and focus on where you feel supported, welcomed, and able to be your authentic self.

Why Theta Wednesday! • Meet 💫

“Coming into college, I was nervous about where I would fit in and if I would truly find my people. Theta quickly became a place that felt like home and gave me friendships, memories, and opportunities that have shaped my college experience in the best way. From late nights with friends to leadership opportunities, I’ve always had sisters by my side supporting me, encouraging me, and helping me grow into the best version of myself.

One piece of advice I would give to PNMs is to focus less on where you think you should end up and more on where you feel the most comfortable being yourself. The right chapter will make you feel valued for who you are, not who you’re trying to be. Trust the process and trust your gut.”
