About the Midwest Transportation Center -

The Midwest Transportation Center (MTC) is one of 10 regional University Transportation Centers sponsored by the Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) of the U.S. The MTC is funded by the 2012 federal transportation bill, the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21). Focus Area -

The research focus area for the MTC

is "State of Good Repair," a key program under MAP-21. The MTC will focus its research on data-driven performance measures of transportation infrastructure, traffic safety, and project construction. In addition to research, the grant from the U.S. DOT's Research and Innovative Technology Administration will also support education programs, leadership development, diversity promotion, and outreach efforts. Partner Universities -

The MTC is a consortium of six universities and will include researchers and students from each:

~Iowa State University (lead university; partner leader Shauna Hallmark)
~Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska (partner leader Ravi Nath)
~Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis, Missouri (partner leader Fatemeh Zakery)
~University of Missouri, Columbia in Columbia, Missouri (partner leader Charles Nemmers)
~University of Missouri, St. Louis, Missouri (partner leader Ray Mundy)
~Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas (partner leader Pingfeng Wang)

Iowa State University is the lead institution, and the Center is administered through ISU's Institute for Transportation. Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kansas, is also a collaborator. Researchers at the partner schools will work with their state transportation departments and other agencies to identify transportation projects and programs important to the Midwest and the various states.

For a day, week, or lifetime: InTrans and Iowa DOT impact Iowa teachers and students through educational workshops!

Both Iowa State University’s (ISU’s) Institute for Transportation (InTrans) and the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) know that one day—or a week in this case—can change everything, especially if it involves education.

As part of Engineer's Week, we're highlighting some of our wonderful engineers. Meet Angela Johnson.

We nabbed Angela even before she graduated from Iowa State in 2009 and she's been a great addition to the team ever since.

She says, “My favorite part of my job is that I am assigned a variety of projects to design and oversee. I get the satisfaction of watching these projects grow from conceptual designs in the beginning to final constructed products to be used by the public in the end. We use computer generated 3D models as part of our design process, and it is very rewarding to see those become real and functional. My advice for anyone wanting to pursue engineering would be to make sure you choose a discipline in engineering that you are passionate about and not necessarily the one that is the highest paying. Engineering can be challenging and intimidating at times, but as long as you are dedicated and enjoy what you are doing, success is sure to follow.”
