Iowa State University researchers are exploring how computer vision, sensors and data science can transform swine production, from automated weight estimation to early detection of health issues. The long-term goal: continuous identification and tracking of individual pigs, a breakthrough that could redefine precision management, animal welfare and genetic improvement.

With U.S. Department of Agriculture support, the team is now testing these technologies in commercial-like settings to better understand their reliability, return on investment and scalability for producers.

Last month, the Iowa Pork Industry Center and Iowa State University Meat Laboratory hosted a pork barbecue class in Ames.

Participants prepared a total of 10 different grilling methods and seasoning combinations on pork cuts such as pressa, Delmonico chops, ribeyes, country-style ribs, and porterhouse chops.

At the end of the workshop, participants reported new knowledge on grilling and pork products and were excited to return home and prepare a variety of pork cuts themselves.

Gilt development starts in the farrowing barn, with research indicating that gilts with stronger pre-weaning growth rates and higher weaning weights have greater retention through multiple parities and produce more pigs by their fourth litter.

The Iowa Pork Industry Center has gilt development resources available for producers at ipic.iastate.edu/reproduction and a video series covering topics such as nutritional strategies, environmental conditions, boar exposure, and estrus synchronization on YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/2rrj5r8f
