Iowa State University Community Design Lab

Iowa State University Community Design Lab The Community Design Lab (CDL) is a partnership between Iowa State University College of Design and the Office of extension and outreach.

Our team is led by Carl Rogers (Director) and Chad Hunter (Design Fellow). Carl Rogers is Associate Professor and Interim Chair of Landscape Architecture and Chad Hunter is a MLA graduate of Landscape Architecture at Iowa State University. The ISU Community Design Lab encompasses many fields of expertise including landscape architecture, architecture, sustainable agriculture, community and regiona

l planning and community outreach and is built within a multi-disciplinary framework. Partnership with communities is the foundation for our work; while we bring professional expertise and research-driven methodology to the table, the local knowledge and decision-making provided by our community partners is essential. Our projects take a long-term, issue-driven approach to developing models for community empowerment through scalable, sustainable initiatives. We are currently working with rural and urban communities in Iowa including Ames, Des Moines, Carroll, Cedar Rapids, Centerville, Clarinda, Maquoketa, Sioux City and Waukon. Our goal is to bridge design knowledge and a broad range of expertise to shape vibrant and empowered communities in their goals to establish a more healthy community. This collaboration yields a stronger understanding of how research expertise and design knowledge shape sustainable environments and empowered communities.

Good afternoon,
The Agricultural Urbanism Toolkit Application:http://research.design.iastate.edu/communitydesignlab/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2014/03/2016_Agricultural-Urbanism-Toolkit-Application.pdf deadline has been extended to March 31, 2016. Please see the attachment if you and your community are interested in applying. This process is meant to assist communities in their preparation and development of a local food systems coalition and create capacity for local food leaders; research and assess food system and health existing conditions for strategic planning; engage diverse organizations and individuals in a collective process for determining appropriate food systems projects for community development; and design and implement prioritized projects that are determined by the coalition based on the research conducted and public input sessions.

This is the LAST year that we will have funding through the Leopold Center of Sustainable Agriculture. The price for participation is $5,000/ year for a three year process. We are still in the research development component of this program, and we are very thankful to all of our partner communities and organizations to contributing to the community process and leading to a unique, collaborative program for community food systems development.

As always, I am more than happy to come present or discuss this opportunity with any community groups/ organizations and encourage the discussion of creative possibilities for partnerships and program development as well. Please reach out to me if you have further questions or would like to get together to discuss further what this could look like for your community.

Best,

The Agricultural Urbanism Toolkit is wrapping up its second year, and it’s time to celebrate the community accomplishments of coalition development and local food projects around Iowa!
The Agricultural Urbanism Toolkit is a program developed by the Iowa State University Community Design Lab and funded through the Leopold Center of Sustainable Agriculture Marketing Food Systems Initiative.

This event will engage local food leaders and partners in a discussion around the power of food and the design process and is open to anyone who is interested in the local and regional food system in Iowa: local food coordinators, producers, city government, community planners, consumers, and any and all local food stakeholders around Iowa. This event is an exciting opportunity to connect with other local food leaders in the surrounding area that are working on new and innovative projects.

The CDL station at the Healthy Ames event yesterday was a popular spot where neighbors and even Cy learned about Complete Streets! A block-long installation of a temporary bike lane demonstrated how Ames streets can be more complete. Thanks especially to CDL Design Fellow Chad Hunter.

Reminder! Tomorrow the Bridge Studio will be having its final pop-up exhibition at 1355 East Grand Avenue, Des Moines from 12-5 PM. The projects examine how transportation, housing, arts, education, aid networks, and recreation can become infrastructural mechanisms for revitalization at the city, neighborhood, and local site scales. The East Bank neighborhoods have been our area of study.
