The Clinical Vascular Research Lab at Iowa State University is looking for participants for an upcoming study on the effect of exercise training on vascular and brain health in middle-aged adults!
We are looking for middle-aged adults between the age of 40-64 years of age. Additional eligibility criteria will be assessed via an online survey as well as during a pre-study visit to the lab. Eligible participants will be randomly assigned to either a) 12-weeks of supervised aerobic exercise training, or b) a wait-list control (asked to maintain current lifestyle throughout the study, with opportunity to participate in similar exercise training program after conclusion of the study).
This study involves 7 in-person visits (1 screening visit, 3 pre-study/informational sessions in a 1-week period, and 3 assessment visits (at the beginning, middle, and end of the 12 week intervention)). If randomly assigned to the exercise training group, you would need to attend an additional 36 sessions over the 12 weeks (3 supervised exercise training sessions per week) on ISU campus, varying from 30-45 minutes per session. We will assess your cardiovascular health, brain blood flow, and cognitive function at three time-points during the study. Assessments at the beginning and end of the 12 weeks will take just under 2 hours, with the middle assessment visit taking just under 1 hour. Participants will receive monetary compensation for completing the study and personalized health reports regarding vascular health, physical fitness, and body composition.
This study is being conducted by Dr. Wesley Lefferts in the Dept. of Kinesiology and is funded by the College of Human Sciences at ISU.
