For those who may not have seen it last week on our Messenger site, below is a message from Shawn Fitzpatrick, who posted it last Thursday, August 22, 2024. If you have questions or need more information, please touch base with Shawn.

For those who want to contribute to the Griffin Meyer Memorial tree fund, there are two options available:

If paying by check, make it out to ‘ISU Foundation’, and on the Memo line write ‘Campus Beautification Fund #0727022, Griffin Meyer Memorial tree’.

If paying by credit card, go to the ISU Foundation website and fill in the boxes. Be sure to include the Fund # and Griffin Meyer Memorial tree.

The Foundation requires a $1,500 donation for the tree purchase, labor for installation, follow-up maintenance, etc.

Attention! There is an ISU Girls Weekend Reunion happening in Ames the weekend of April 29-30, 2022, orchestrated by Ms. Jane (Arp) Tomesch.* “You are welcome to join!” says Jane. “You are welcome to share this news with others!” Two events are open to any/all Sullivan and Stewart alums, or close enough, nongirls included. On Friday, April 29, meet at 5:30 p.m. for happy hour at Sweet Caroline’s, a newish restaurant/sports pub on Main Street. On Saturday, 6:30 p.m.-ish, the girls are swarming into Welch Avenue Station in campustown for pizza and beer.** That is all.

* Ms. Tomesch was inducted into the Sullivan House Hall of Fame in her first year of eligibility.
** Bringing your Linden Hall Food Service ID to get in the door isn’t required, but it wouldn’t hurt either.

One day last week, driving along Lincoln Way to work, we (the editorial we) passed Linden Hall just as a classic guitar riff came blasting from the car speakers. (.38 Special, “You Keep on Running Away,” circa 1982.) Seemed like a sign to post something on the Stewart-Sullivan FB site.

As you may know, Stewart and Sullivan houses have been important places for how the university has dealt with the pandemic. Since last August, Linden Hall has served as isolation housing for students testing positive for COVID-19. Oak-Elm has served as quarantine housing. There’s a trove of information, data, testing info and stories of life on campus during COVID on ISU’s COVID-19 Response website, but if you want to know more about the isolation/quarantine effort and Linden’s role, check out this link:

Last fall especially was a rollercoaster on campus, as every other place. A student’s experience mirrored all of our experiences, everywhere: It’s different, it’s strange, it’s tiring, it’s not what I signed up for — but it’s what I’ve got to live through.

This spring semester at ISU has been relatively calm. (Last week, only 1 student was in isolation and 3 in quarantine. Positivity rate since Jan. 1 is at 3.3%.) As rollout of vaccines continues to expand, the odds of having a more normal (closer to somewhat normal?) fall semester 2021 look more promising.

And then we (the editorial we) can perhaps look ahead to a time and opportunity for former residents of Stewart and Sullivan to gather together once again. In the flesh. Take care of yourselves! Stay safe and healthy! Keep playing classic ‘80s guitar riffs!
