Students in EDUC 4390: Teaching Science in the Primary Grades are taking learning beyond the classroom 🌿🔬 During a recent field experience, they explored how hands-on opportunities, like studying entomology at Reiman Gardens, can help young learners better understand science concepts.

Through experiences like this, students reflect on how to design engaging, developmentally appropriate lessons that align with standards and support all learners 🍎✨ By connecting research-based practices to real-world settings, they’re building the skills to create meaningful and inclusive science experiences in early elementary classrooms.

Students in HIST 4980: Methods of Teaching History/Social Sciences are bringing the past to life through hands-on, inquiry-based learning 🔍📚 Working with Rachel Hansen from the Iowa State Historical Society, they explored how artifacts and images can be used to spark curiosity and deepen understanding in the classroom.

Through a “History Mysteries” activity, students analyzed objects from museum collections, asking questions and piecing together evidence to determine their purpose 🧩✨ This approach helps future teachers see how engaging students as historians, through observation, questioning, and investigation, can lead to stronger connections and lasting learning.
