We’re proud to announce Ton Ngoc as the 2026 recipient of the Janice Peterson Anderson Medallion Award—our highest undergraduate honor for students majoring in art, graphic design or interior design in the College of Design.

A graduating senior in graphic design, Ngoc was recognized for work that blends bold visual storytelling with interactive design to explore identity, cross-cultural experience, and social impact.

She was selected from a talented group of finalists, alongside Ella Christensen (studio art) and Macy Rieser (interior design). Their work reflects strong individual voices and a shared commitment to creativity and care across disciplines.

Please join us in congratulating Ton Ngoc and celebrating this year’s finalists.

College of Design Dean Luis Rico-Gutierrez has been named the inaugural holder of the Steven King and Susan Boren Endowed Dean’s Chair in Design.

Made possible through a generous gift from 1968 landscape architecture graduate Steve King and Susan (Sam) Boren King, who became an honorary College of Design alumna in 2023, this endowed position will provide funding to expand opportunities for students and faculty, support innovation, elevate the college’s national profile, and strengthen its impact in communities across Iowa.

Design has the power to shape stronger communities.
At the Make/Change Symposium, students, faculty, and industry partners explored how design can drive real-world civic impact.

Across two days, four outstanding keynote speakers from across the country were joined by local panelists from Des Moines Area MPO, DART, Iowa Department of Transportation, and Iowa State University Extension Community and Economic Development.

They shared perspectives on public space, community engagement, systems thinking, and design for social change—topics our students are already exploring in studio courses with real clients, and in some cases, bringing directly into the symposium.

Led by faculty fellows from our Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I+E) program, the symposium created space for new ideas, collaboration, and practical approaches to community-centered design.
