Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia - Alpha Delta Chapter Alpha Delta Chapter at Iowa State Est. 1922
Making Men of the Highest Type since 1898 We always welcome potential new members.

We are the Alpha Delta Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America. Chartered at Iowa State on December 17, 1922, the Alpha Delta Chapter is celebrating its centennial year. Sinfonia was born on October 6, 1898, at the New England Conservatory in Boston, when a group of thirteen young men under the guidance of Ossian Everett Mills “to consider the social life of the young men students o

f that institution [and] to devise ways and means by which it might be improved.” Sinfonia became a national fraternity on October 6, 1900, with the admission of a group of men at the Broad Street Conservatory in Philadelphia. For over a century, Sinfonians in nearly every field of study and professional endeavor have transformed music in America. The opportunity of becoming a Sinfonian is offered to as many men as possible who, through a love for music, can assist in the fulfillment of the Fraternity’s Object and ideals either by adopting music as a profession, or by working to advance the cause of music in America. Feel free to contact us if interested in joining!

Congratulations to our graduating Brothers ❤️🖤💛

Brother Jay has been a sturdy and trustworthy older brother, uplifting and encouraging those around him. As he continues pursuing his Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Psychology, Jacob carries forward the same compassion, positivity, and dedication that made such an impact during his collegiate years. We look forward to his continued success!

Brother Spicer has dedicated himself to the Sinfonia, taking on many roles and duties. His work for Province 26 and the National Fraternity will continue following graduation, and we’re glad to see him serve Sinfonia. Graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering, Tyson will be returning to the Quad Cities to begin his career with IMEG. We look forward to a bright career ahead for him!

Thank you, brothers, for what you have given to Sinfonia as collegiates. Congratulations on this incredible accomplishment. We are excited for your next journeys of making music and harmony with fellow Men of the Highest Type❤️🖤💛

Samuel Martinek has a plan most of us would sign up for: launch his Aerospace Engineering career around the United States and hit the beach whenever possible. The sousaphone senior is graduating with his Aerospace Engineering degree and a minor in Nondestructive Evaluation. Sun's out, Sam!

Last Saturday, the Sinfonians went to West Des Moines to volunteer at .

We helped package food which will be sent to starving children across Iowa and the globe. It was a great opportunity to come together and spend our Saturday giving back to a meaningful cause.

The Brothers had fun helping out in a team environment, while enjoying some light hearted competition of seeing who could pack the most boxes. Safe to say, we locked in 😤

Thank you to Meals from the Heartland for this amazing opportunity and we hope to do this again sometime soon! We liked 😎

Today in Ames history: On March 22, 1858, the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm (now Iowa State University) was officially established by the Iowa General Assembly.

The next June, Story County was chosen as the location, defeating proposals from Johnson, Kossuth, Marshall, and Polk Counties. Construction of the new college was slowed by the Civil War and inadequate funding.

In 1862, President Lincoln signed the Morrill Act into law to establish land-grant colleges focused on teaching agriculture, science, military science, and engineering. Iowa was the first state to accept the Morrill Act, awarding the grant to Iowa Agricultural College. Classes opened in 1869.

Happy birthday, Iowa State University!

Today is George Washington Carver Day in Iowa!

Carver was the first Black student to attend Iowa State, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1894 and a master's degree in 1896.

After graduating, Carver taught at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, exploring ways to help Black tenant farmers out of poverty. He was especially known for his work with peanuts, sweet potatoes, and other alternative crops to cotton that could be grown in the south.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke on the campus of Iowa State University on January 22, 1960 to a crowd of more than 1,500.

During his talk titled “The Moral Changes of a New Age,” he stated, “We stand on the threshold of the greatest era of our time in race relations. We are challenged to rise above individual concerns to the concerns of all humanity.”

During our 10 Year Anniversary, we were honored to present the Richard von Grabow Excellence Award to Brother Tyson Spicer, and the Blake & Sterling Wickham Spirit Award to Brother Samual Martinek.

The Richard von Grabow Excellence award goes to a Brother of the Alpha Delta Chapter who exemplifies the best of our ideals through the education, understanding, and living of our ritual. This award recognizes a Brother who earnestly and sincerely devotes time and care to learning and living the ideals of the Fraternity, inspires reverence through excellence in ritual demonstration, and readily develops devotion to the same in his Fraternity brothers.

The Blake & Sterling Wickham Spirit award goes to a brother of the Alpha Delta Chapter who lives with an unapologetic dedication to our Alma Mater and who shows that academics and extracurriclars and intrisically tied together with the love of one’s school. This brother understands that not only does his degree support his school but his involvement in extracurriculars as well.

Congratulations to Brother Spicer and Brother Martinek.
