Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia is the world’s oldest and largest secret national fraternal society in music. Sinfonia was born on October 6, 1898, at the New England Conservatory in Boston, when a group of thirteen young men under the guidance of Ossian Everett Mills met "to consider the social life of the young men students of that institution [and] to devise ways and means by which it might be improved."

Sinfonia became a national fraternity on October 6, 1900, with the admission of a group of men at the Broad Street Conservatory in Philadelphia. For over a century, Sinfonians in nearly every field of study and professional endeavor have transformed music in America. The opportunity of becoming a Sinfonian is offered to as many men as possible who, through a love for music, can assist in the fulfillment of the Fraternity’s Object and ideals either by adopting music as a profession, or by working to advance the cause of music in America. Happy Chapter Day everyone!Today we celebrate the 12th anniversary of the Sigma Alpha Chapter of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity.

When the group of students who set out to establish our chapter did so, they did not know what would happen. They did this only knowing they all shared a strong bond and love for music and a deep desire for the advancement for music in America in whatever form that took. It was this act that has passed down through the classes to the current generation of the chapter. It is for this we thank you and we wish you a happy Chapter Day!

For today’s brother spotlight we have someone who has touched the minds and hearts of so many people in the chapter, Pete Crump.

Pete Crump, a grad student studying Geographic Information Science and Technology, was initiated into the chapter in 2017 as a brother of Nu Class. Pete is undoubtedly one of the members of this chapter who leaves an impact on every single person that he meets. The way in which he conducts himself and the way he cares so deeply about the things are truly inspirational. There are few who have shaped the chapter quite like he has, and through his role as FEO he has made sure to help molded every single brother, always encouraging them to ask the big questions. Pete has taken on other leadership roles in and outside of our chapter as well. Having served as tenor sax section leader in the UMMB as well as a big brother in our chapter. Pete has been there for so many of our classes including having seen through the most difficult of processes. Pete is as inquisitive as he is genuine and that is truly inspiring. He has left his mark on every brother in the chapter and I know that each of us is better for having gotten the chance for having gotten to work alongside him. Pete loves asking the big questions as well as being asked them. For example, when approached with the question of what he would do if stranded on a deserted island with fellow brother Chris Sperry, he simply responded with the quite philosophical “What WOULDN’T I do?!?!?!? 😈👀”

For today’s brother spotlight we look to none other than our very own brother Jacob Schilp.

Jacob, a junior in the psychology department, was initiated to our chapter in the spring of 2021 as a brother of Sigma Class. Jacob in the UMMB has been a member of the drumline having played cymbals as well as having been in the bass line. In our chapter he has also served as a big brother. He is an incredibly sincere person who is never afraid to be himself, his sense of humor is truly his own.. He is incredibly dedicated to his friends and is always open and kind to all around him. A testament to all of this can be seen from when he was speaking to the chapter about about how he would get himself and fellow brother Chris Sperry off a deserted island by “making him into a boat and sail home.”

With the hectic nature of Rush Week having concluded, we’d like to continue with our brother spotlights. Today we have our brother, Ian McCue (pictured on the left).

Ian McCue is a junior mechanical engineering major who was initiated into the chapter in the fall of 2019 as a member of Pi Class. Throughout his time at UMass he has served as a leader in the marching band being euphonium section leader as well as having been a big brother in our chapter. He is a person who carries himself with great poise. His way with words is truly unmatched by many of the people with whom I’ve met, and the elegance and dignity in which he carries himself are truly awe inspiring. He is someone who is very empathetic and understanding. Once when asked about fellow brother Chris Sperry, Ian said that if the two of them were stranded on a deserted island they’d likely spend the time “Getting sunburnt probably.”
