Welcome back!

How was your summer? We hope you had a wonderful and relaxing break!

This academic year, as every Fall Semester, we offer an Intensive Intermediate Catalan course for anyone who has a basic knowledge of Catalan or any other Romance language (such as Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, etc.).

The course consists of two different but complementary (!!) classes: CAT246A (3cr.) Tues. - Thurs. from 10 to 11.15 AM and CAT246B (2cr.) Thurs. from 11.30 AM to 12.45 PM.

👉 Dynamic classes with real conversations.
👉 Games and activities that make speaking easy and fun.
👉 Catalan music and films.
👉 Cultural events related to Catalan culture.

Benvinguts/-des de nou!

Com ha anat l’estiu? Esperem que hàgiu gaudit d’unes vacances meravelloses i reparadores!

Aquest curs, com cada Fall Semester, oferim un curs intensiu de Català Intermedi per a tothom que tingui coneixements bàsics de català o d'una altra llengua romànica (com ara castellà, portuguès, italià, etc.).

El curs consta de dues classes diferents però complementàries (!!): CAT246A (3cr.) els dimarts i dijous de 10 a 11:15 h i CAT246B (2cr.) els dijous d'11:30 a 12:45 h.

👉 Classes dinàmiques amb converses reals.
👉 Jocs i tasques perquè parlar sigui fàcil i divertit.
👉 Sessions de música i cinema en català.
👉 Activitats culturals relacionades amb la cultura catalana.

We have already reached the end of another school year!

It has been a pleasure to share the 2025–2026 academic year with the students. You made it fly by!
Thank you so much to both the students and non-students who participated in the activities organized by the UMass Catalan Program. We had a wonderful time chatting and playing games at Cafè Català, watching the films featured in the 16th Catalan Film Festival, celebrating Sant Jordi Day, and more.

Many thanks as well to the Institut Ramon Llull () for enabling UMass to continue offering a Catalan program.

Now again congratulations to , who is graduating this semester with a minor in Catalan studies.

Enjoy your well-deserved summer vacation!

I ja hem arribat al final d'un altre curs!

Ha sigut un plaer compartir amb els estudiants aquest curs acadèmic 2025-2026. Heu fet que hagi passat volant! Moltíssimes gràcies tant als estudiants i com no estudiants que heu participat en les activitats proposades pel Programa de Català de la UMass. TambÊ ens ho hem passat d'allò mÊs bÊ parlant i jugant durant el Cafè Català, veient les pel¡lícules del 16è Festival de Cinema Català, celebrant la Diada de Sant Jordi, etc.

Moltes grĂ cies tambĂŠ a l'Institut Ramon Llull per fer possible que la UMass segueixi comptant amb un programa de catalĂ .

We are reaching the final stretch of this Spring semester…✨ But don’t worry, we will be back next Fall Semester with our Intensive Intermediate Catalan Course!

Never studied Catalan before? No problem! If you know any other Romance language (Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, etc.) you've got it made! If you want to improve your Catalan, build confidence speaking, and enjoy learning in a great environment, this course is for you 💬📚

Memories from the 16th Catalan Film Festival! What an unforgettable celebration! We had a blast watching three different movies centered around this year's theme: "Dignity in Resistance."

A huge thank you to all the attendees and sponsors who made it possible: Institut Ramon Llull; Edwin C. Gentzler Translation Center at UMass; Spanish and Portuguese Program at UMass; Languages, Literatures and Cultures Department at UMass, and Film Studies Program at UMass Amherst.

Thanks also to the two filmmakers, Marcel Barrena and Patricia Franquesa, who shared their work and took part in a live Q&A.

We are still thinking about those standout moments on screen and the conversations that followed long after the credits rolled. Until the next edition… Keep watching, keep creating, and keep telling stories in Catalan! 🍿🎥

Records del nostre 16è Festival de Cinema Català. Quina celebració tan inoblidable! Ens ho vam passar d’allò més bé veient tres pel·lícules diferents centrades en la temàtica d’enguany: “Dignitat en resistència”.

Un agraïment enorme a totes les persones assistents i als patrocinadors que ho van fer possible: l’Institut Ramon Llull; el Centre de Traducció Edwin C. Gentzler de la UMass; el Programa d’Espanyol i Portuguès de la UMass; el Departament de Llengües, Literatures i Cultures de la UMass; i el Programa d’Estudis de Cinema de la UMass Amherst.

GrĂ cies tambĂŠ als dos directors, Marcel Barrena i Patricia Franquesa, que van compartir les seves obres i van participar en una sessiĂł de preguntes i respostes en directe.

Here is a recap of our Sant Jordi's 2026 celebration at UMass Amherst.
We watched the video that our students made explaining the St Jordi traditions; we enjoyed a wonderful talk about Blai Bonet's poetry by Toni Gomila; we also had fun making panelletes (a traditional Catalan dessert); we had the pleasure of graduating Livy Trummel, an outstanding student who minored in Catalan Studies at the UMass Amherst; we discovered the winners of the 2026 Translation Contest; and we ended the day by screening the documentary "Diari de la meva sextorsiĂł" by Patricia Franquesa. We had a blast!

AquĂ­ teniu un petit resum de la nostra celebraciĂł de Sant Jordi 2026 a la UMass Amherst.
Els nostres estudiants van fer un vídeo explicant les tradicions de Sant Jordi; vam gaudir d’una magnífica xerrada sobre la poesia de Blai Bonet a càrrec de Toni Gomila; també ens ho vam passar molt bé fent panellets; vam tenir el plaer de graduar Livy Trummel, una estudiant excel·lent que ha cursat el minor en Estudis Catalans a la UMass Amherst; vam conèixer els guanyadors del Concurs de Traducció 2026; i vam acabar el dia amb la projecció del documental “Diari de la meva sextorsió” de Patricia Franquesa. Last week, the Catalan Studies Program held a series of events in honor of Sant Jordi.

One of these events was the award ceremony for the 2026 Sant Jordi Translation Contest. It is our pleasure to present this year’s winners:
- First Prize: Iciar Soriano, a Ph.D. candidate in the Spanish and Portuguese Program at UMass Amherst.
- Second Prize: David Parsard, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Hispanic Studies at Brown University.

They each received a set of translated Catalan books into English, courtesy of the , as well as a monthly subscription to Filmin thanks to .

Congratulations to all who participated in our Sant Jordi Translation Contest! I ENHORABONA ALS GUANYADORS!

Special thanks to our guest judges for their predisposition: Corine Tachtiris, Margara Russotto, and Hillary Gardner.

Today is the last day of a week full of events organized by the Catalan Studies Program. We are glad to present the final movie of the 16th Catalan Film Festival. Today, April 24, we will be screening *Casa en Flames*, directed by Dani de la Orden.

Please join us for this final film, which centers on this year's theme: "Dignity in Resistance." The movie has English subtitles, and dinner will be served!

As you already know, during this week, the Catalan Studies Program is holding the 16th Catalan Film Festival. We are starting today, April 21, with *El 47*, directed by Marcel Barrena. The director will join us live before the film to introduce it. Then, at the end, we will stream a Q&A with him that we recorded a few days ago.

Please, join us for a week of great films centered around this year's theme: "Dignity in Resistence." All movies will have English subtitles, and we will also be serving dinner!

The UMass Catalan Program would like to invite you to our celebration of Sant Jordi, the Day of the Book and of the Love in Catalonia, which this year will take place on Thursday, April 23, from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., in room N211 of Integrative Learning Center at UMass Amherst. In the photo we detail our program, with all the activities and workshops. The final activity will coincide with the Catalan Film Festival course, during which an award-winning film will be screened. There will be free food and red roses for everyone! All of this is possible thanks to the collaboration of , , , and UMass Languages, Literatures and Cultures Department.

It's free and everyone is welcome! We hope to see you there!
