We work with university leadership to improve funding, resources, and well-being while building community through events and initiatives. The Graduate Student Government (GSG) is the official governance body representing the interests of graduate students, at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The representative consists of three branches, the executive, legislative and the judicial. The exe
cutive branch consists of elected officers (President, Vice President, and Treasurer), and appointed secretaries (Secretary of University Relations and Media Communications and the Chief of Staff). The legislative branch houses senators from each graduate department and is led by the elected speaker and associate speaker. The judicial branch operates independently from these branches and oversees conflicts that may arise. The judicial branch consists of five appointed justices who elect within themselves a chief justice. Each year the Graduate Student Government is allocated a number of seats to be representatives on the councils of the Faculty Senate, providing graduate students with a direct say in our university. There are many seats unfilled, please contact us if you would like to sit on a council. Graduate Student Organizations (GSO): GSOs events and activities are overseen and allocated funding by the Graduate Student Government. All GSOs must be registered with GSG in order to maintain an active status on campus. Child Care Assistance Program: Administered by the Graduate Student Government, with funding from GSG and Student Affairs, is funding for graduate student parents to assist with child care needs. Funding allocation is based on a need and income basis. The funding is available every semester and the deadline is typically around the same date as the end of the add/drop periods. Look for emails from the Vice President on when child care applications open and due dates
The Graduate Student Government also provides funding to Student Legal Services Office, Student Union Art Gallery, Student Union Craft Center, Everywoman’s Center, and Family Resource Center.
