Congratulations to Shayna Klainberg ’26E who studied abroad with our exchange partner and has been awarded an English Teaching Assistant grant to Germany with the ! 🎉🦣🇩🇪

📷️ Repost: Congratulations to Shayna Klainberg ’26E who has been awarded an English Teaching Assistant grant to Germany with the ! As a German major who studied abroad at the University of Göttingen, and with plenty of experience in education, Shayna is perfectly suited for this role. She has fostered language learning through imaginative play in person with preschoolers and incorporated role-playing games while tutoring adult Korean learners of English remotely. She draws on her four-years long involvement with Mr. Gad’s House of Improv at Amherst to come up with inventive and responsive solutions to student’s stumbling blocks.

Shayna notes that play “lowers barriers to communication, builds confidence, and makes language practice joyful.” She even plans to use her love for the game of baseball to teach aspects of American culture as an ETA. She also hopes to share elements of her Jewish upbringing, hosting Shabbat dinners to stimulate conversations about tradition, history, and identity. She hopes this will create a setting where students and colleagues can reflect on their own German traditions in the spirit of exchange.

As a lifelong language learner beginning with Hebrew and Spanish as a child then German and Yiddish in college, Shayna knows the challenges and rewards of finding one's voice in another language. In fact, she plans to make language the center of her career. After Fulbright, Shayna will pursue graduate study in education or linguistics and continue to promote mutual understanding as she works as a teacher of language and culture.

Here’s to the year ahead, Shayna! We are so of you!

Congratulations to to Skyler McDonnell ’26 who studied abroad with our exchange partner has been awarded a study grant in Germany with ! 🦣🎉🇩🇪

📷️ Repost: Kudos to Skyler McDonnell ’26 who has been awarded a study grant in Germany with ! His triple major in German, computer science and sociology, combined with a year studying abroad at the University of Göttingen inspired his interest in pursuing an MA in Sign Languages at the University of Hamburg. Skyler’s linguistic passion has led him to gain facility in German, Spanish, Dutch, and American and German Sign Language. He is intrigued by so many things: the import of non-manual communication (facial and upper body movement) in sign language; the study of Natural Language Processing; and how linguistic research varies between spoken and signed languages.

Skyler recognizes the importance of cultural immersion to absorbing and understanding a people’s language. In Germany next year, he plans to build upon networks he has already established through studying abroad by volunteering and joining hiking and music groups. Long term, Skyler may pursue a PhD or work in the field of designing and promoting accessible technology. Wherever he lands, the goal is the same: to “contribute to a more interconnected and inclusive world.”

We know you’ll do it, Skyler! We are so of you!

📷️Repost: Last on our list of is Junior, Riley Priddey, who has been studying abroad in Scotland! Here's what Riley had to say about his time overseas:

"I’ve been studying abroad at the University of Edinburgh and playing for the university’s first team, where we compete in the lower, Eastern division of the Scottish professional footballing pyramid. I’ve played with some top players and have been lucky enough to travel to Madrid, Dublin, England, Prague, Portugal, and Greece, and have met some amazing people here both through my American program and through the football team. Scotland hosts a rich footballing tradition, and Edinburgh is a lively university city with outgoing locals and great food, drinking, and sporting culture."

Well done, Riley!

Congratulations to Ada Chen ‘25 who studied abroad with our exchange partner and has been awarded an English Teaching Assistant grant to Taiwan with the ! 🎉🦣🇹🇼

📷️Repost: Kudos to Ada Chen ‘25 who has been awarded an English Teaching Assistant grant to Taiwan with the ! As the translator for her own family early on, Ada’s teaching skills grew as she developed customized ESL tutoring sessions for adults and children, led an intensive EMT course for 30 students, and developed effective strategies for communicating with children struggling with a variety of developmental challenges.

As an undergraduate, Ada received a Critical Language Scholarship to study Chinese in Taiwan and spent a semester abroad in South Korea at Yonsei University. She has traveled through Southeast Asia, Japan, Guatemala, and Mexico, forging friendships across continents and immersing herself in daily life with cultural depth. A psychology major currently working as a research assistant at Amherst, Ada plans a career in medicine. She has served as an EMT on campus, an ESL language tutor at Jones Library, and volunteered at a local hospital and a hospice home. Ada will bring to her placement a practice of deeply caring for her communities. She is also a dedicated runner and adventurous backpacker!

Ada looks forward to building on the friendships she established in Taiwan as a student, gaining skills as a teacher attuned to cultural nuance, and strengthening her fluency in Mandarin. As an ETA, her focus on teaching, language development and building cultural bridges, will prepare her well for her goal of becoming a family physician.

We are thrilled and so of you, Ada!

Congratulations to Rania Adouim ‘26 who studied abroad in Australia with and has been awarded an English Teaching Assistant grant to Thailand with ! 🦣🎉🇹🇭

📷️Repost: Congratulations to Rania Adouim ‘26 who has been awarded an English Teaching Assistant grant to Thailand with ! She comes to this adventure with teaching experience in many arenas – philosophy course TA, museum docent, summer school elementary school English teacher, tutor for a 6th grade ESL learner, and high school curriculum writing intern for a non-profit. These roles, along with her work as co-president of the campus Asian-American Writers' Group, have developed Rania’s ability to lead respectful, age-appropriate, and culturally exploratory dialogue that will inform her efforts to share American culture abroad.

A philosophy and statistics double major, Rania studied abroad for a semester in Australia where she joined clubs, learned about the country’s cultures, and explored the banking industry. She indulged her love for the outdoors, exploring the extraordinary Australian landscape – something she plans to do in Thailand as well. As president of Amherst’s outing club with plenty of experience leading hikes, she intends to volunteer with an environmental organization such as The Green World Foundation and visit educational farms to learn about (and try!) practices such as rice fishing.

Rania is eager to learn more about her own Thai heritage even as she thinks ahead to a career in curriculum writing, reimagining K-12 courses to prompt cultural competence, project-based learning, and self-exploration. The ETA is a great next step toward achieving that goal.

We’re excited and so of you, Rania!
