lease note that comments made on Amherst’s social media accounts are the opinions and expressions of the commenter only and do not constitute agreement or endorsement by the College. Without limiting our discretion to remove submissions, those that are particularly likely to be removed include:

• Personal attacks of any kind
• Harassment, intimidation, disparagements or threats to any other person
• Promotions of bigotry or discrimination
• Vulgar, obscene or sexually explicit language
• Posts that are unnecessarily repetitive or copied into multiple threads
• Posts that are clearly off-topic
• Promotions of products, services or political organizations
• Solicitations for external fundraising purposes
• Content that maliciously disguises or misrepresents the poster’s identity
• Fraudulent or deceptive messages, such as chain mail
• Infringements on copyrights or trademarks

Over the summer, students read "Matrix," the 2021 novel by Lauren Groff '01, author, bookstore owner, and lauded literary figure. This week, Groff joined students on campus as the DeMott Lecturer, offering reflections on her writing and words of wisdom for incoming first-year and transfer students.

"Matrix" earned the Joyce Carol Oates Prize, was nominated for a National Book Award, and was chosen as this year’s DeMott Summer Reading for the Amherst community in honor of the 50th anniversary of coeducation at the College. A deeply researched imagination of Marie de France, Groff's novel invited students to consider questions about power, faith, belonging, and building a life of purpose and conviction.

Just as characters in "Matrix" delve into their daily work and play—laboring, studying, thinking deeply, transgressing, and falling in love—Groff implored Amherst’s new students to the same. https://bit.ly/4zXoW0i

What happens to items students leave behind at the end of the year? At Amherst, they get a second life. 🌱

Students donate unwanted items during move-out, which are then collected and made available to students for free when they return to campus in the fall.

The impact is significant:
• Over 15 tons of usable materials saved from landfills
• Over 90% of collected furnishings and household goods put back into use
• Over 1,000 students participate each year
• An estimated $350,000 saved by students and their families

The College’s student-run Tread Shed bicycle program takes the same approach with abandoned bikes. Through the program, more than 100 abandoned bicycles have been diverted from disposal and over 30 have been repaired and returned to use. https://bit.ly/3S69NZl
