UMass - Amherst Upward Bound

Last Friday we were privileged to bear witness to many past Upward Bound staff, teachers and students walk across the stage, receive their diploma’s and hoods. This right here, y’all. We are making the possibility of possibilities REAL for ourselves and those we work WITH towards justice. For me, and many of our students didn’t know this, we the staff of UB designed the program with purpose and with intention. UMass Upward Bound was the laboratory where we experimented in a radical kind of love. Where we created a new ecosystem of liberation and equity. This is transformational. I do not celebrate because they have been “allowed in the door” - but because they kicked it in and did not use the masters tools to tear down the masters house.

These brilliant minds and beautiful people have and continue to work for the radical transformation of this society. Much love and respect to these dedicated educators and people as they continue forward ever, backward never. Congrats Dr. Ashley Carpenter, Dr. Moijue Kaikai, Dr. Yedalis Ruiz Santana Dr. Gregory Coleman and Ruth Sugey T and Rosana Zarza-Conova and Travis Davis (2 Masters!) on attaining your Masters Degree!! To all past and present UB members (students, staff, and instructors alike) make your dreams a reality and help us to change this world for the better!! A Luta Continua!!!

For those of you from the 1st Summer Institute, you should recognize Rosa Clemente sharing the spotlight with the other FIERCE Women of Color, Activists, Advocates and Change Leaders at the Golden Globes. The one thing they forgot to mention was that Rosa Clemente was our very own ELA Teacher (and so much more)! You have and always will make us so very proud!
