In recognition of Lou Gehrig Day, ballparks across the country pause to honor a legend and shine a light on a cause that still needs our help. It is the 6th annual Lou Gehrig Day a powerful reminder that baseball and ALS are forever connected.

Lou Gehrig faced ALS with courage that inspired the world, and his fight, sparked a movement that continues today.

Lou Gehrig Day is not just a tribute, it is a chance to take action to raise awareness and further our goal of finding a cure for ALS.

On this Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women who served our country, and we remember that their sacrifice can continue long after service ends. Veterans face a higher risk of ALS, up to twice as likely to be diagnosed. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ’™

Today, we honor their service and commit to fighting for answers, support, and a cure for all those impacted.

PHI DELTA THETA MICHIGAN ALPHA CHAPTER PARTICIPATES IN PROGRAM TO HELP LOCAL UNHOUSED PEOPLE & PROMOTE CITY OF ANN ARBOR ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE

On Tuesday, April 28, the Oxford Exchange Resident Swap Day was held on the property of the Phi Delta Theta Michigan Alpha (PDT) chapter house.

Oxford Property Management (OPM, https://oxfordcompanies.com/real-estate-services/property-management) and the local non-profit organization House 2 Home (H2H, www.housen2home.org) collected furniture and additional household items donated by University of Michigan (U of M) students and other citizens of Ann Arbor for the benefit of unhoused people in Washtenaw County.

The event was successful. A significant amount of donated items were collected in a delivery truck and storage container parked on PDT's property.

All donated items were taken to a nearby warehouse in the City of Ypsilanti where H2H will work with goverment agencies and organizations to help unhouse people to pick out items at no cost to furnish apartments in which they are being placed.

This free shopping experience is designed to give unhoused people the dignity of being able to choose furnishings they like for their new homes.

In addition to benefiting local unhoused people, this initiative is helping to reduce the amount of usable items that are often thrown out in trash dumpsters by U of M students and local renters at the end of apartment lease terms that terminate in May.

Reducing the amount of items placed in trash dumpsters, and ultimately local landfills, has a positive impact on the environment.

In that regard, PDT's participation in this philanthropic initiative will enable the fraternity to earn points from the City of Ann Arbor that count toward the requirement to comply with the City's new Green Rental Housing Ordinance which is an implementation step for A2ZERO. The A2ZERO initiative is the City's plan to achieve carbon neutrality be 2030.

PDT Michigan Alpha Alumni Association President Greg Karmazin said, "The Phi Delta Theta Michigan Alpha Chapter has a long history of engaging in successful philanthropic activities. The fraternity is committed to supporting initiatives by the City of Ann Arbor, local non-profit organizations and area businesses to benefit the community and citizens in need. We were pleased to support House 2 Home and Oxford Property Management with their outstanding program to help unhouse people and promote environmental sustainability,"

On Monday, April 27, the MLIVE Ann Arbor News published a positive article about the Oxford Exchange Resident Swap Day at PDT:

OPM and H2H were very please with PDT's participation in the initiative, and felt it went exceptionally well for a first time effort at this new location for the annual event.

Since being established in 2017, H2H has completely furnished more than 1,890 homes supporting nearly 4,000 local individuals and families transitioning from homelessness. The people helped by this program include 1,815 children and 240 veterans of U.S. military service.

The Oxford Exchange Resident Swap Day is one of the single largest annual events to collect donated items for H2H's program.
