One of the distinguishing characteristics of the U-M Medical School is the exceptional quality of our faculty physicians. It is a privilege to work with such talented colleagues. Too often, we take their expertise and accomplishments for granted. So on March 15, we paused to recognize and thank 31 faculty physicians who were inducted into the “League of Clinical Excellence.” These individuals, along with their guests and Health System leadership, attended a reception and dinner to celebrate the exceptional care they provide our patients.

The League of Clinical Excellence recognizes Medical School faculty physicians who exemplify the provision of the finest care to our patients and their families. The inaugural group included those who have been awarded the Medical School’s annual Outstanding Clinician Award since its inception in 2001.

The inaugural inductees will assist in the selection of subsequent classes as we seek to recognize our outstanding clinicians utilizing a process similar to the annual Outstanding Clinician award process. We will also work with this group to identify process and policy improvements to better serve our patients.

You may recall that last spring, we recognized an inaugural group of faculty who were inducted into the “League of Research Excellence,” designed to celebrate faculty researchers who achieve significant success. We intend to launch a “League of Educational Excellence” later this year.

Please join us in congratulating these individuals whose contributions help make the U-M Health System a leading academic medical center.

Kyung J. Cho, MD, FSIR, is an interventional radiologist equally well regarded for his clinical work, research, contributions to the literature and education of residents, fellows, radiologists and referring physicians. Steward Reuter, MD, JD, states that it is this range of qualities that makes Dr. Cho so deserving of an SIR Gold Medal: "Kyung has been one of the leaders in our field of interventional radiology as a teacher, investigator and administrator. He has brought credit to himself, the University of Michigan and the Society of Interventional Radiology."

Dr. Cho is known for his research into the application of interventional radiology to a range of procedures and techniques, such as the use of endovascular carbon dioxide, hepatic microcirculations, sclerotherapy, venal caval filters, among others. He also performs research in selective venous sampling in the localization of endocrine disease. He has communicated his research findings extensively, having published 152 articles in peer-reviewed journals, authored or co-authored 50 book chapters and published two textbooks, Gastrointestinal Angiography and Carbon Dioxide Angiography. His papers have dealt with a range of topics, including angiography, pharmacoangiography and embolotherapy of the majority of abdominal organs.

He has lectured broadly as well, having given 90 scientific presentations, 29 lectures at the University of Michigan and 101 invited lectures at meetings around the world.

Radiology Faculty Member Wins Important Research Award

Kenneth F. Koral, Ph.D., an emeritus professor of Radiology, was named the recipient of the 2011 Loevinger-Berman Award for advancing the understanding of internal dosimetry in relationship to risk and therapeutic efficacy. The award, which was presented at the 2011 annual Society of Nuclear Medicine meeting in San Antonio, Texas, is named in honor of Robert Loevinger, PhD, and Mones Berman, PhD, researchers who formulated the MIRD schema for internal dose calculations.
After earning his BS and PhD (nuclear physics) from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, Koral completed post-doctoral training at Queen’s University in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and at U-M, where he served as a National Cancer Institute research trainee. In 1979, Dr. Koral joined the Division of Nuclear Medicine at U-M, where he remained until his retirement in 2007.
Koral’s research interests include activity quantification with SPECT, estimating radiation dose absorbed by tumors during radiopharmaceutical therapy, scatter correction in SPECT, SPECT of I-131, and reconstruction algorithms. He has published more than 75 articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as more than 65 abstracts. Since retiring from the University, Dr. Koral has continued to publish and to remain active in the dosimetry research community as a reviewer. In recognition of his many contributions to internal dosimetry, the MIRD Committee was delighted to select Kenneth F. Koral as the 2011 Loevinger-Berman Award winner.
