After his parents separated, he spent part of his youth in foster care before being adopted by a family that helped him find structure. Mourning rose to basketball stardom in high school and at Georgetown University, eventually becoming a dominant center in the NBA. In 2003, his career was nearly cut short when he was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease, but after a successful transplant, he made a remarkable comeback and went on to win an NBA championship with the Miami Heat.

May is National Foster Care Awareness Month!

The campaign by the Children's Bureau recognizes the important role that people from all parts of child welfare play in supporting children, youth, and families.

This year's theme highlights the need to create a child welfare system that authentically engages and supports young people who are preparing to leave foster care.

In the past few years, foster youth graduation rates have increased to 8-12%, and all of us at the Blavin Scholars Program are proud to be a part of this effort.

The Blavin Scholars Program focuses on supporting young adults during their college years at the University of Michigan, to ensure students have everything they need to thrive, personally, academically and professionally, and graduate.

This month, we celebrated 13 new Blavin Graduates, making it a total of 130 since the start of the program!

Throughout the month, we have been posting stories of success to inspire our community. Follow along to learn more!
