Olivia Harlow, a fourth-year PhD student at the University of Michigan, received an F31 fellowship through the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to research how our lungs recognize and protect against infection.
Working in the lab of Anukul Shenoy, PhD, an assistant professor in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology, Harlow focuses on how the lungs build long-term immune memory against Streptococcus pneumoniae. This common bacterium can cause a range of serious illnesses, including pneumonia and meningitis.
“One thing I have sincerely admired about Olivia as a researcher is the rigor with which she approaches her work—very often she will diligently replicate an experiment multiple times (no matter how demanding they are) or tone down her assertions if she does not feel comfortable that her findings are solid,” Shenoy said.
