ICYMI: For the first time, a stem cell model has produced a structure similar to an early human embryo with a yolk-sac-like structure from a single starting stem cell population, without direct genetic manipulation. The development could help shed light on early pregnancy loss by answering questions surrounding early human embryonic development.

Stem cell models that resemble the early weeks of human pregnancy are being developed to better understand human development. However, the structures are imperfect models — incapable of developing beyond small colonies of cells — with similarities to human embryos peaking at day 8 of the cell culture.
