The University of Michigan Department of Astronomy started in 1854, with the hiring of the first PhD faculty member and the installation or the first major research instrument, the Meridian Circle telescope in the Detroit Observatory. More than a century and a half latter, our faculty are leaders in their fields, with access to some of the best instuments in the world.
