At a recent Axios event on AI and the future of work, President Anne M. Kress shared how the college is preparing students for a rapidly changing workforce through industry partnerships, training and AI-integrated learning.

“We’re hearing from employers that they’re interested in students who learn how to learn,” President Kress said. “The apps will change, the tech will change, the algorithm will change. But students who come out ready to continually skill, reskill, upskill and cross-skill — they’re going to be fine.”

She also emphasized the importance of durable skills like resilience, curiosity and adaptability, adding: “Everyone is going to have to be an AI practitioner … whatever your field is.”

Kress concluded with a powerful message: Students should be not just consumers, but creators. “They can create, they can innovate, they can change the future.”

More than 1,600 graduates crossed the stage at ’s 60th Commencement on Monday. In total, 7,860 graduates earned an impressive 8,572 credentials. From workforce-ready certifications to transfer degrees, NOVA graduates are ready to make an impact across our region and beyond.

“Today we celebrate you because you turned those dreams into reality. You turned that ambition into action — and that's what makes you extraordinary,” said NOVA President Anne M. Kress.

Keynote speaker Jonathan “Jack” Ham, who graduated from medical school the day before Commencement, encouraged graduates to embrace persistence and resilience.

“One of the most important lessons that NOVA taught me was to be patient with myself,” Ham shared. “The grit and the resilience that you've developed... will continue to serve you as you move forward.”
