English classes at The Valley are places where stories come alive. Whether reading fiction or poetry, writing and editing journalistic copy, or creating stories for the stage, screen, or page, English majors have the opportunity to interact with and create their own narratives. Students choose a pathway of study in literature, communications, creative writing, theater, or secondary education, but

the basis for all pathways is the study of literature: imaginative, complex, and challenging texts in a variety of genres. Our goal is to teach students to write, speak, and think more effectively.

Jordan & Tressa from Dr. Teddi Sakellarides’ Environment & Literature course--which is part of programs such as English & Communications, Environmental Science, Creative Writing, and Social Justice & Civic Engagement--just came back from a backpacking trip in Loyalsock State Forest along Old Loggers Path! “Throughout the trip, we kept discussing class concepts and books, including biocentrism and anthropocentrism, and the differences between life in ‘wilderness’ and ‘society.’ We were reminded of how much we enjoyed the lit class and thought of Dr. S along our adventure. It was so meaningful to connect what we learned in the classroom to actual application when interacting with the natural world. We encourage others to connect their classes like Lit & the Environment to their outdoor spaces :). PS The gallon sized-ziplock bag is our new friend, Bradley! Go Jordan & Tressa! During my internship with IGI Global Global Scientific Publishing, the sister company to e-Robotic Press, I learned about ethics and copyright, and in this position, I will learn more about what the editing process before publication looks like.” Through close mentorship and our extensive LVC network-- which includes our Breen Center for Career & Professional Development--100% of English & Communications and Creative Writing students who want an internship, get one (some earn multiple internships). (( Recent Grad Update! )) Victoria Fredericksen ‘25-- English major w/ Specialization in Secondary Education, and minors in Spanish and Musical Theater-- earned a teaching position following graduation last year! (Pic here showing art by some of her students :)) One year later, how are things going?

“This school year, I started teaching 8th grade ELA at Northeast Middle School in the Reading School District, and I’ve kept myself quite busy to say the least. Within this year I became the Team Lead for my 8th grade team, piloted a reading intervention program in my school, started the school’s drama club and directed their first musical in over a decade. I have absolutely loved every second of teaching this school year. It has been very challenging, but it has been incredibly rewarding. I was even acknowledged mid-year for my students having the most amount of ELA score growth from the fall to the winter! I am so excited to continue working in this school and district with the opportunities to grow in my profession and continue working with absolutely incredible scholars. This summer I am working as a lead for the district’s summer enrichment program and am in the works to continue being a team lead for an 8th grade team next year in the same school!” Go Victoria! (( Recent Grad Update! )) Wed. Where Are They Now? Hannah Benson ‘24 --double major in English & Political Science, with Specialization in LVC Honors and a minor in Common Law--who also earned the PA House Archives Internship with the Pennsylvania House of Representatives--completed her Masters in Library and Information Science Program at the University at Buffalo Graduate School of Education in 2025. She now has earned a position as Reference and Access Service librarian at Keuka College , creating an accessible, inclusive space that fosters literacy, learning, and community! “I currently oversee the circulation desk as well as the student workers (training, scheduling, projects, etc.). I also help oversee the reference desk, working with students to further their research and connect them with appropriate resources. I fulfill Interlibrary Loan requests, order and catalog new materials, and create promotional resources for library programs. What excites me most about this position is that I get to learn something new every day. I’m getting hands-on experience with just about every department within an academic library. I also really enjoy working with the students; their enthusiasm about learning, finding resources, or just working in the library makes my job so rewarding☺️. I love coming to work every single day. If anyone is considering a career in librarianship, they should absolutely go for it!!” Go Hannah! Lebanon Valley College Lebanon Valley College Bishop Library
