Congratulations to Dr. Pitonyak, Michael Harris ‘26, Jacob Marsh ‘25, and Jack Putnam ‘25 who, along with collaborators from Penn State Berks and the University of Tuebingen, published a paper in the peer-reviewed journal Physics Letters B. The paper, “Transverse single-spin asymmetries in γSIDIS as a direct probe of quark-gluon-quark longitudinal momentum structure,” gave numerical estimates for the future Electron-Ion Collider for the production of photons from the high-energy collisions of electrons with transversely polarized protons. They found the observable has the potential to provide unprecedented information on quark-gluon-quark correlations inside of protons. The research was supported by Dr. Pitonyak’s National Science Foundation grant.

Nov. 7 was the International Day of Medical Physics, which attempts to showcase the profound impact physics has on medical technology and patient care. We highlight LVC Physics alumna Jackie Kain ‘10, who received her MS in Medical Physics from Columbia University. She is currently a board certified Diagnostic Medical Physicist and Assistant Radiation Safety Officer at Penn Medicine/Lancaster General Health and serves as a faculty member in the Imaging Physics Residency Program at UPenn. LVC Physics and LVC Physics Club are excited to participate in the STEM in the Community Night on Tuesday, 6-8pm at Annville Elementary! Join us for some fun hands-on demos! Some of the ideas that will be explored are

Can you hit the target?: How the angle and velocity of a projectile affect its motion

How fast can you spin and balance yourself?: Experience the effects of conservation of angular momentum

How do we generate electricity?: Fun with Faraday’s law

Can you get the LED to turn on?: Building basic circuits
