Meet Shay Taban, a soon-to-be Fall 2026 Leadership Studies Graduate! ✨🎓

“My journey here was anything but linear, and I wouldn’t trade a step of it. I’m a New Yorker at heart, now rooted in California, and that city taught me to bet on myself. The Leadership Studies program at Cal Poly Humboldt gave that instinct direction. It taught me that leadership isn’t something you’re born with; it’s something you build, and it’s the kind of supportive program that helps you find your lane. It gave me language and structure for the challenging leadership roles I’d taken on outside of work, for years, on instinct. My work as a licensed esthetician gave me the stability to put myself through this program, and it let me show my children what it looks like to set a goal and see it through, with my husband in my corner the whole way. Going back to finish this degree was my way of proving to them, and to myself, that it’s not how you start; it’s how you finish.” — Shay Taban

We will be highlighting Fall 2026 Leadership Studies Grads and Alumni throughout this Fall as part of our program’s 10 year anniversary! Stay tuned for more and consider the question: where do you see yourself in 10 years? 🌲💛

Meet Maria Cupich, a soon to be Fall 2026 Leadership Studies Graduate! 🎓💚

When reflecting on where she will be in 10 years, Maria shares that, “The past few years have taught me that life can change quickly, so I’m keeping an open mind about the next ten. Looking ahead, my boys will be grown, and my responsibilities will shift as I step into a new stage of life. I hope to be further along in my leadership journey, and as life settles into its next rhythm, I also see a lot more travel for my husband and I.”

Meet Tracey Engelking, a soon-to-be Fall 2026 Leadership Studies Graduate! 🎓💛

“This degree has been 35 years in the making, so it is totally unreal to be here thinking about where I can be in ten years now that I’m all degreed up. Incredible!! When I started here, I had no connection to becoming a leader. Admittedly, I was here for the bachelor’s degree and to check the box. To me, leaders were people with strong, alpha personalities. Very ‘the buck stops here.’ How could I be a leader when I am very much not that? I’m compassionate, soft and pretty ‘woo woo’ spiritual by nature; I never thought someone with my personality had enough metal to lead. Through the coursework here, and having administrators, professors, and members of my cohort (who are now lifelong friends) cheer me on, I started to see myself differently and rethink what being a leader means. Yes, great leaders are strong and found at the tops of huge corporations and massive organizations. But they are also found in quiet offices, sitting one on one with someone, helping them find their strength.” — Tracey Engelking
