Meet Nikhil Venugopal, a Human Resources Intern with Mavs EDGE partner North Central Texas Council of Governments. Nikhil is pursuing a Master of Science in Human Resources Management from UTA’s College of Business and is expected to graduate in 2027.
During his internship, Nikhil supported the HR team across key functions, including Training and Development, Recruitment, and agency-wide projects. His day-to-day responsibilities included assisting with policy and procedure development and contributing to the performance review process.
Among his contributions, Nikhil helped launch the organization's Performance Appraisals initiative. He also drafted automated communications sent directly to potential hires and employees participating in training and development programs, streamlining the agency's operational workflows.
Reflecting on his experience, Nikhil shared, “The real-world experience you receive is incredibly beneficial and teaches you skills that are not taught in your classes. These skills are extremely important for you, especially if you're looking for a job, as recruiters focus on skills more than your GPA. Always research well about the organization you have applied to, as it shows you have prepared well and you are serious about the internship.”
Looking ahead, Nikhil aims to transition into a full-time HR role upon graduation, with a growing interest in Training and Development as well as Compensation and Benefits. Gaining hands-on experience with institutional HR systems and databases in a government setting has provided him with valuable foundational knowledge that will benefit his long-term career path.
