Congratulations to Senior Lecturer Michael Gouge of UNC Asheville’s Department of Mass Communication on receiving the Teaching Excellence Award in the Social Sciences.

As advisor to The Blue Banner, Michael has guided student journalists to earn more awards than any other student newspaper in its category while mentoring students through hands-on reporting, media ethics, and journalism education.

We are proud to celebrate this well-deserved recognition and grateful for the impact he continues to make on our students and department. 👏

Tonight on campus: Hannah Arendt: Facing Tyranny - Please join us!

This documentary invites us into one of the most challenging questions of our time—and any time:
How do ordinary people become part of harmful systems?

Through the work of political thinker Hannah Arendt, the film explores the idea that the greatest danger is not always obvious evil, but the absence of critical thinking, reflection, and moral judgment. What does it mean to think responsibly in a complex world?

Staff members on The Blue Banner visited the studios/newsroom of Asheville Media Group, home to several radio stations including 105.9 The Mountain and the news website 828NewsNow, on Wednesday. The media group's news team hopes to work with student journalists on future stories.

Last night, Mass Comm professor Anne Slatton and the UNCA Center for Jewish Studies screened The Wild One. This was a beautiful look into the life and career of Jack Garfein, a Holocaust survivor and filmmaker. Thank you to everyone who came out to join us!!
