Welcome to the Fall 2021 semester!

All Humanities group lectures will be replaced with remote options for the first three weeks of class based on the University guidelines for group gatherings.

University guidelines are re-evaluated every 2 weeks for potential revision. These protocols continue to be informed by new information and a deep and abiding commitment to the holistic well-being of each student, faculty, and staff member in our community.

We look forward to returning to our regular lecture schedule soon!

The Humanities program will soon be publishing data-driven, student-centered and community-led curriculum in the form of brand new textbooks. Read more about this exciting project at the link!

The two faculty leading UNC Asheville’s Humanities Readers revisions often compare the project to an elephant. It’s large. It’s heavy. But it’s also taken on new life over the past four years of work, and the elephant metaphor means more to NEH Distinguished Professor in the Humanities and P...

Dr. Oliver Gloag, Associate Professor of French and Francophone Studies and regular contributor to the Humanities program connects the Black Lives Matters movement with philosophers Frantz Fanon and Jean-Paul Sartre in this article written for the Institute of Arts and Ideas.

Sartre's unfaltering support of anti-colonial movements, and his fearless condemnation of state sanctioned violence, have never been more prescient.

The fall semester has started! Due to restrictions on large gatherings and for the heath and safety of all, the program has halted the common lecture series for this semester, but faculty and staff have been hard at work all summer to adapt the curriculum and provide new online resources for students. We look forward to sharing more with you in digital spaces and formats as we stay connected, even when remote.

Welcome back!

HACK IT! DIY Divine tools was an art hack at UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Hall during the first Asheville Mini Maker Faire, 2019. The event was planned and run by Victoria Bradbury's New Media Advanced Interactive Design students with Leslee Johnson's HUM 124 class. This collaborative interdisciplinary hack allowed students to draw upon their knowledge of humanities and ancient cultures and combine it with technological objects (physical computing and sensors), allowing a diverse group of students to think critically while innovating ways to prototype tools that a god or goddess they have studied might be able to use.

The groups of hackers (NM420) and crafters (HUM124) created the "Pulse of Love" for Aphrodite, a tool to tell if someone is in love, "A Curse Detector Wand" for Enkidu, a wand that makes a shrill noise if you've been cursed, a technologically advanced bolas for the Hero Twins, Xbalanque and Hunapu, a technologically effective discuss thrower for Vishnu, and an offering sensor for the Buddha that lights up if your offering is acceptable, and then Buddha gives it back. At the end, an award ceremony presented participants with gold and silver medallions designed and 3-d printed by New Media students and faculty.
