Part Two: Understanding Water Infiltration

CCC HP students used framed mock-ups to learn how to apply siding and trim. They also learned how to remove, then patch, rotted siding and poorly applied roof shingles. Thank you Steff Eiter, HP adjunct, for creating these in-shop scenarios.

CCC Historic Preservation students restore historic Uppertown Fire Station Windows.

Matt Powers, head of facilities at Clatsop County Historical Society, and also a graduate of CCC’s historic preservation program, led a window restoration workshop for current preservation students. Powers guided students through paint stripping, re-glazing, and re-roping of four sets of windows. A CCC historic preservation work experience student will complete the restoration of those windows.

CCC Historic Preservation Students Learn Blacksmithing

Matt Moore taught a two-weekend workshop in blacksmithing to Clatsop Community College Historic Preservation students. First, the students learned to cut cold, and created a compass. Then, they were introduced to forging by creating a nail. Next, they made decorative handles, a chisel, tongs, and in one case, a hammer!

CCC Students Construct Storm Sashes for Alderbrook Hall

Over the last three weekends, CCC Historic Preservation students were taught woodworking skills by CCC alum, Chris Gustafson, who led them in the construction of traditional wood sash storm windows for Alderbrook Hall. Students gained experience using molder, tenoner and shaper machines. The storm sashes will protect the hall’s historic wood windows, improve the building’s energy efficiency, and reduce sound infiltration from the adjacent highway.
