OHIO’s beautiful residential campus is a center for academic, social, cultural and recreational activities. Housing and Residence Life strives to engage, motivate and challenge students using our mission, values and goals for guidance. The department is responsible for the administration and programming within a housing system of 35+ residence halls across three residential greens that house over

7,000 students. We take pride in creating community and cultivating leaders across Ohio University by providing students with not only a safe and comfortable place to live, but also a thriving and vibrant educational community.

A spotlight on one of Housing's multipurpose spaces: The East End! Located on East Green in Jefferson Hall, The East End is open to all students (residential, commuter, graduate, and more). The space features a large lounge area, study spaces, a game room, conference rooms, moveable whiteboards, and a printing station. It is also right across from Jefferson Marketplace. Not every fire alarm is caused by a fire. Everyday activities can create enough smoke, particles, or v***r to activate a smoke detector. Knowing the common triggers can help prevent unnecessary alarms!

🚨Aerosol sprays: Products such as Febreze, hairspray, dry shampoo, and perfume can release particles that may be detected by a smoke alarm. Use these products away from smoke detectors.

🚬Smoking and va**ng: Smoke and v***r can activate fire alarm systems. Smoking and va**ng are prohibited in residence halls and should never be done indoors.

🕯️Candles and incense: Open flames can produce smoke and create a serious fire hazard. Candles, incense, and other open-flame items are not permitted in residence hall rooms.

🍿Unattended or burnt food: Microwave popcorn, Easy Mac, and other foods can quickly overheat or burn if left unattended. Follow cooking instructions and stay nearby while food is heating.

TIP: If you burn food, leave the door to the microwave closed to allow the smoke to dissipate.

A fire alarm is there to protect you and your community. Help prevent unnecessary alarms by knowing what can trigger them.
