Did you know about this sealed time capsule set to be opened in thousands of years? This crypt has been sealed since this day, May 25th, 1940, and it will stay that way until the year 8113! Oglethorpe University President Thornwell Jacobs was inspired to preserve a snapshot of life in the 1930s by the opening of the pyramids to the public in the 1920s. Inside this mysterious vault are microfilm reels with books popular at that time, an original script of Gone With the Wind, a specially sealed Budweiser bottle, and dental floss. It is still welded closed and resides in Phoebe Hearst Hall on Oglethorpe’s campus.

Today in Georgia history, the Georgia Marble Company was founded. This transformed into a multi-billion-dollar industry for the state and still operates today. Some of the most iconic buildings around the United States are built of materials from right here in Tate, Georgia from the Murphy Marble Belt.

All the photos in this post are sourced from the “Georgia Marble Company Records, circa 1910 – 2004" collection on our database, officially held by Kennesaw State University Department of Archives, Rare Books and Records Management

WARNING! Crimes such as murder, sexual assault, and robbery discussed.
On this day, May 6, 2003, Carl Isaacs was executed by lethal injection. He is one of the four men behind the infamous 1973 Alday Family murders. Carl Isaacs and his fellow inmates Wayne Carl Coleman and George Elder Dungee escaped a Maryland prison and met up with William “Billy” Isaacs, Carl’s 15-year-old brother. They kidnapped and murdered Richard Miller of Pennsylvania before stealing his car and fleeing towards Florida. In Seminole County, Georgia, they stopped to attempt a burglary of the Alday family home. The victims returned to their house during the attack and were all shot and killed with Mary Alday also being sexually assaulted before her death. Though the men tried to flee, they were soon caught and their sentencing began. This is the third most deadly mass murder in the state of Georgia totaling seven victims.
