UGA Jere W. Morehead Honors College

UGA Jere W. Morehead Honors College The Jere W. Morehead Honors College at UGA provides an Honors education through smaller courses taught by UGA’s best professors.

Morehead Honors College at the University of Georgia enriches undergraduate experiences in and beyond the classroom through research, internship and travel-study opportunities. We also offer a wide range of opportunities for learning and growth that extend far beyond the classroom. These opportunities include a variety of programs that connect great students with great faculty, such as our book di

scussions, held in faculty members’ homes, and our lunchbox lectures, giving students the opportunity to learn about the latest work being done by faculty members. The Morehead Honors College's Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities, better known as CURO, makes it possible for all UGA students to conduct undergraduate research alongside faculty mentors. UGA Honors students regularly go not only beyond the classroom, but also beyond campus and to the far reaches of the state and the world.

On Thursday, April 9, Honors students visited the School of Social Work housed in the historic mill site on the North Oconee River, learning about the school's mission over free burritos. Dean Philip Hong introduced students to the school's focus of policy, advocacy, community-based organizations, and human-centered practice in promoting change.

Then, students were led on a guided tour by Dr. Jane McPherson (pictured), an associate professor of social work and director of the Complex Cloth project, to see pieces of the brand-new, award-winning installation detailing the history of the former cotton mill.

Congratulations to UGA juniors Vaughn Frost and Annie Mehta for being among 454 undergraduates across the country selected as this spring’s Barry Goldwater Scholars. The scholarship is the highest undergraduate award of its type for the fields of mathematics, engineering, and natural sciences and provides funding for students studying within these fields.

Vaughn is a Foundation Fellow, Stamps Scholar, and Honors mechanical engineering major, and Annie is a physics and astronomy major. They both started conducting research with their current labs in the spring of their freshman years, and both have worked with the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities, housed within the Honors College.

Vaughn’s primary research involves looking at the impeller blades in a rocket engine and how they vibrate as they increase the flow and pressure of a fluid. He’s searching for ways to avoid catastrophic failure, also known as resonance, in rocket engines to help make launches safer and to bring down construction costs.

Annie is working on a project to classify protoplanetary disks, which are the birthplaces of solar systems. Using high-performance computing to work with a high volume of observational datasets, she hopes to generate new information about key planetary formation conditions.

In the future, Vaughn plans to pursue a doctorate in mechanical engineering, specializing in acoustics, vibrations, and fluid-structure interactions. Annie plans to earn her doctorate in computational astrophysics.

UGA’s major scholarships office, housed in the Morehead Honors College, provides students across campus with assistance as they apply for national, high-level scholarships.

Connor Fenneran traveled to Italy with the Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s study abroad program to learn from and perform alongside Italian musicians throughout the country. Participating in daily lessons to improve his craft as a trombonist, Connor was able to establish connections with Italian professionals and see incredible musical performances, including orchestra concerts, open air choral shows, and even a chamber concert in a cathedral.

“It is imperative that I diversify the input I receive about my playing and engross myself in all sorts of different styles and sounds of music,” Connor said. “This experience would not have been possible for me without the Honors International Scholarship Program, and I am forever grateful to have been provided with this opportunity and experience.”

Gracyn Manley studied abroad in Valencia, Spain, last summer! For her first time outside of the country, every interaction became an opportunity for her to practice her language skills and develop confidence navigating a new environment. Gracyn took Spanish courses that challenged her to apply her knowledge of the language in real-world contexts and was immersed in local culture through touring landmarks, attending flamenco performances, and learning how to make paella from local chefs.

“My summer in Spain was far more than an academic requirement or travel experience — it was a deeply formative chapter of my life that brought together years of language study, academic preparation, and personal ambition,” Gracyn said. “It confirmed my passion for international studies, solidified my professional goals, and gave me the confidence and tools to pursue them. I am incredibly grateful for the scholarship that made this life-changing experience possible.”

Honors students traveled to Georgia's capitol yesterday with the Arch Policy Institute to learn about the state-level policymaking process, observe the state’s ongoing legislative session, and meet with Athens-area representatives, including state Sen. Frank Ginn and Reps. Spencer Frye, Houston Gaines, and Eric Gisler.

This was a great day dedicated to civic engagement and we can’t wait to see what our students do with their new knowledge!

Our students stayed busy over spring break! Honors Associate Dean James Warnock traveled to Finland with first-year students last week through UGA's Connect Abroad program, learning about what is often considered the world’s happiest country through a lens of sustainability, equity, and innovative thinking.

With Finland aiming for carbon neutrality by 2035 and 75% of its land covered in forests and a vast natural landscape, the country provides a unique chance to study the intersections of ecological stewardship and sustainable development.

Throughout the trip, students visited the Aalto House and Studio Aalto — the former home and offices of renowned Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, who helped shape urban environments, buildings, and sustainability throughout the world — and witnessed real-life case studies presented in the Smart Cities of Kalasatama and Jätkäsaari.

On the program’s final day, students traveled out of Helsinki, Finland’s capital, to Nuuksio National Park, which features a plethora of lakes, cliffs, and forests, offering visitors a slowed pace of life and a deepened connection to nature.

Will Federer is this week’s HISP Highlight!

Will spent summer 2025 interning in Germany for Finanzguru, an app that helps German users with their personal finances. Working remotely, Will visited nearby German cities like Mannheim, Stuttgart, and Cologne during the week while getting work done on train rides and in cafes. He enjoyed learning about app development while exploring a potential career in consulting.

“This internship experience has fundamentally transformed my approach to career planning and life priorities in ways I never anticipated,” he said. “I am very grateful I was able to have my experience abroad and learn so many lessons about work life, location, and culture, and I will utilize these lessons going forward.”

Our next HISP Highlight goes to none other than Grey Cohen!

Grey studied abroad in Rabat, Morocco for the spring 2025 semester with the IES Abroad Rabat program. She took classes with leading scholars, conducted an independent research project on Morocco’s economic development, and interned at the Arab Center for Research. Grey lived with a host family during her time abroad, which allowed her to practice her colloquial Arabic while on a Moroccan diet of tajine, dates, and couscous.

“Studying in Rabat, with the community, education, language, and interpersonal experiences, was a defining time in my college career,” Grey said. “I am grateful to UGA for making this experience possible, and to the donors who are helping students like myself change the course of our lives.”
