Tennessee Wesleyan University’s Board of Trustees and President Dr. Tyler Forrest agreed to a five-year contract extension which will extend Forrest’s contract through June 2030. The Board of Trustees voted on the extension during its April 25th meeting.
“Tyler is the right person at the right time for this job,” said Dr. Bobby Goodfriend, Chairperson for the University’s Board of Trustees. “In the almost three years he has been leading TWU, we have celebrated record enrollment, the balance sheet has been strengthened, and the fundraising efforts are paying off with several major donor funded projects either completed or planned for this summer.”
Among those are renovations to three residence halls, Banfield-Durham Hall, Sherman Hall, expanding the Wilhelm Dental Hygiene Program and addition of a simulation center, Townsend Hall, and the soon-to-be-named Bobby Goodfriend Baseball Field. All of these and others have been part of the University’s We Are Wesleyan Capital Campaign, a now $27 million comprehensive campaign, that has already passed its first two goals of $19.25 million and $25 million, respectively. In collaboration with the City of Athens, Forrest worked to secure the former Ingleside School property through a long-term lease agreement that accounted for the largest expansion of the University's Athens campus in over four decades. A soccer, lacrosse, and track facility are planned for the site.
Over the course of the last three years, the University’s U.S. News and World Report rankings have continued to rise and a new “TW” logo was adopted for university-wide use to enhance the institution’s branding. A significant gift was secured to name a new college, the Colloms College of Arts and Sciences, which led to a reorganization of the academic affairs division into three distinct colleges. Student access has also been a priority through the establishment of the TWU Pledge, a last dollar scholarship that allows students with family incomes of $50,000 or less to attend Tennessee Wesleyan tuition free.
Since Forrest became president, there have also been additions to academic programming, particularly in the graduate programs that helped spur the increases in enrollment. The addition of a Master of Science in Sport Leadership, Master of Science in Education, and Executive Master of Science programs in Project Management, Business Analytics, and Business Administration.
On July 1, 2022, Forrest assumed the role of President of Tennessee Wesleyan University, becoming the first McMinn County native to be named to this office in the University’s 168-year history. At the time of his appointment, he was the youngest university president in Tennessee and believed to be one of the youngest in the nation.
“It is truly an honor to serve as President of Tennessee Wesleyan University and to have the chance to walk alongside our students, employees, alumni, and community in support of this great University,” Dr. Forrest remarked. “A hometown opportunity such as this does not present itself often, and now to have the opportunity extended is truly a great reward for Emily, Caroline, Ben, and me. I appreciate the leadership of our Board of Trustees, led by Dr. Goodfriend, and their continued support of Tennessee Wesleyan.”
Prior to his appointment at Tennessee Wesleyan, Forrest served in several roles at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, advancing through the finance and budget ranks ultimately becoming Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration prior to the appointment as President of Tennessee Wesleyan University.
