This April, The Indigo Girls returned to Athens, once again collaborating with students from the Ohio University Symphony Orchestra. 🎤

Thanks to faculty advocacy and planning, the entire orchestra was able to take the stage with a total of 60 students and three faculty performing, creating an impactful learning experience for the student musicians.

As part of the OU Fringe Festival, students workshopped an original jukebox musical in less than 30 hours, made possible through the experiential learning fund. 🎼

The experience was led by Anthony Alterio, associate professor of instruction for dance and musical theater, who created the musical years ago. This time, however, he was able to design it as an educational experience that allowed students into the creative process.

After a whirlwind of learning the music, choreography and staging, the group presented the workshop performance the weekend of April 25.

Signing and celebrating the transformation of arts education 🖌️

In April, a ceremonial beam-signing event was held for the Violet L. Patton Center for Arts Education, allowing OHIO community members to sign a structural steel beam that will become part of the new building. 🏗️

The event highlighted the progress made so far, as well as honoring the late Violet Patton, whose signature was added to the beam, recognizing her generosity and vision for arts education that made the facility possible.

Construction on the Patton Center is progressing steadily, with completion expected in Summer 2027 and student occupancy planned for Fall 2027.

Dan Denhart, Professor and Head of the Technical Direction program in our School of Theater, is retiring after 42 years at OHIO. 👏 🎭

Throughout the decades, he has been a constant presence in roles as a teacher, mentor, technical director, administrator and trusted colleague. He has had a hand in nearly every production produced by the school during his tenure.

“People often ask what keeps me here. It is both the quality of the production work and teaching we offer our students and community, and the generous, knowledgeable and caring colleagues that give so much to the important work of storytelling.” ⭐️

Congratulations to Dr. Christi Camper Moore, associate professor of dance, for being recognized with the Presidential Teacher Award. 💚

She was recognized for her commitment to “inviting students to participate fully, think critically, and engage across multiple modes of knowing.”

Honored at the annual Ohio University Faculty Recognition and Awards Ceremony, the Presidential Teacher Award is one of OHIO’s highest recognitions for teaching excellence.
